Cultivate Positive Communication Skills with April Conversation Starters
For many reasons, creating connections and helping my boys develop positive communication skills is high on my list of priorities. The ability to communicate one's thoughts and feelings is a critical life skill. These skills also help build trust and confidence.
As a former mental health therapist, I highly value the power of communication. When used with a positive intention and approach, verbal and nonverbal communication can help solve problems and allow people to work together.
As a mom, I strive to cultivate trust, connection, and openness with my boys. I want my boys to know that they can always come to me, no matter what they are thinking and feeling. And I will be there for them, ready to listen with a nonjudgmental ear and shoulder for support.
With all the horrible stories of school shootings and violence in the news, I find myself wanting to instill the positive habits of communication and connection even more.
Many moms ask me how to get started with teaching their kids positive communication skills. Moms ask questions, like, "Where do I start?" and "What should we talk about?".
My best tips for helping your kids learning communication skills are:
- Keep it simple.
- Don't force it.
- Make it casual and fun.
- Incorporate natural conversation while working on chores and playing games.
- Model the behavior of making observations.
- Talk about feelings and how to recognize.
- Be as nonjudgmental as possible. Try not to insert your own experiences, thoughts, and feelings.
- Point out verbal and nonverbal behaviors.
