As a mom of 5 boys (ages almost 3, 5, 8, 11, 14), I know what to look for when finding that perfect toy for a beloved three-year-old. I am super excited to share what I have learned over the years after much trial and error in providing my boys with quality toys. Although my boys all have different interests and abilities, I have found success in selecting the best toys for 3 year old boys using a few important considerations.
7 Tips for Picking the Best Toys for 3 Year Old Boys
The #1 tip that I would give any individual who would like to pick a toy for a 3-year-old boy (or any child!) is safety. Consult toy safety guidelines prior to selecting a toy for a child. Carefully inspect a toy (at least as best as you can in its packaging) and read reviews of the product.
3 year old boys typically love to be active, in the home and outside. When thinking about toys, don’t forget options like balls, ride-on vehicles, and sidewalk chalk. For active indoor play, inflatable ball bits, tents, and tunnels are popular hits.
3. Confidence vs. Challenge
Your preschool-aged boy is learning so much every day! As your boy learns new skills, confidence is built. Help that confidence grow by providing a variety of toys. Choose some toys that your child feels comfortable using and can do with ease. Select other toys that will provide enough challenge to help them grow but not induce frustration.
Continue to mix educational toys in with fun selections. Interactive books, games, and puzzles are fantastic toys for 3 year old boys. Encourage role playing with play sets like kitchens, work benches, and cash registers.
Ask yourself: for what reason are you considering this toy? Would you like to help your 3 year old boy develop an interest in a particular area? Could this child benefit from practice or experience with this type of toy? What types of fine and gross motor skills will this toy develop?
6. Learning Styles
Does the 3 year old you have in mind show a preference for how they experience the world around them? From a young age, kids often demonstrate a tendency to learn via a dominant learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). Kids may gravitate towards toys that allow them to play using that learning style. It is wonderful to provide toys with those characteristics, as well as provide toys from other learning styles to help your 3 year old develop those skills.
For example, my soon-to-be 3 year old (Xman) is a kinesthetic learner. He learns through touching, manipulation of objects, and moving. A majority of his toys have kinesthetic uses, like playdough, blocks, and ring toss. Auditory (like bells and xylophone) and visual (like books and stickers) toys are also a part of his daily play.
7. Developmental Milestones
What types of developmental milestones have your 3 year old reached? Here are four developmental skills to think about as you look at toys:
- Social & Emotional
This last tip combines the above six suggestions to help you select the most appropriate toys for 3 year olds.
