Typically, math is a fun time during our homeschool. My boys often complete their lessons with no fuss or complaint. I enjoy teaching them math with books and hands-on learning.
For some unknown reason, however, learning the upper times tables has posed a challenge in our homeschool. As easy as it was for my older boys to memorize their lower multiplication facts, it was just as frustrating for them to remember their upper times tables. Professor, who is an excellent student, would come to me in tears of frustration.
I searched for different approaches to helping kids memorize their upper times tables. It felt like these methods worked temporarily. The boys could spout off the correct answers for a few days, only to begin mixing up answers and becoming agitated.
I felt like I hit gold when I saw Times Tales! I needed an effective resource to help me teach my boys their upper multiplication tables. This description from Trigger Product’s site convinced me that I needed to find out more:
Times Tales DVD is a creative, innovative mnemonic-based program that makes
it fun and easy to memorize the upper multiplication facts. Times Tales uses
cute, simple stories to provide students with a “memory peg”, allowing them to
quickly recall otherwise abstract facts.
When we received our products, my boys were eager to begin (watching a DVD creates great excitement in our homeschool!). As the boys watched Part 1, I used the printable CD included with the set to prepare for the next step. I also constructed the dice (part of printables) to be used as a review game after watching Part 1.
Imagine my shock when I reentered our great room to hear my boys excitedly discussing the Times Tales stories and reciting upper multiplication facts with ease! After one viewing, my older boys could easily recall and retell the stories and apply them to memorizing their facts. Smiley (6) and Bear (4) also knew most of the multiplication facts!
Here is a YouTube video showing a 6 year old using Times Tales:
I decided to put their learning to the test. Along with my boys, I watched the review Game Show quiz. I couldn’t help but grin from ear to ear while I watch Smiley and Bear jumping up and down with excitement as they pointed out the different characters and explained their storylines. My grin continued to spread as my boys accurately told me their upper multiplication facts. Tears of disbelief yet joy sprang to my eyes! My boys were learning multiplication!
As we used the character dice to practice their multiplication facts, Bear studied the flip book that accompanied the Times Tales set. He flipped through the book and retold the stories for each roll of the dice. My four year old was correctly answering the multiplication problems!
