Why Quick, Easy, and Low-Prep Activities are Important

As homeschool moms, our time is precious. We’re juggling about 53 things in a day and need to conserve our energy and attention. We need simple solutions that don’t add to our stress. We don’t need complicated, expensive, or anything like that. If you’re like me, you just want something that will get (and keep) your kids engaged so you can spend time together and enjoy it.

Quick, easy, and low-prep activities let us focus on what matters most - having fun and building relationships. These types of activities provide us with opportunities to chat, connect, and blow off steam. Plus, they give our kids room to explore, get creative, and even develop new interests in light and stress-free ways.

And while it may seem that these types of activities are just fun or fluff, they can actually still be educational and effective. Concepts can be reinforced, skills practiced, and new ways of approaching an idea can be a part of it all.

I like to think of these activities as low-pressure ways to do some outside the box thinking, feeling, and doing!

The Benefits of Easy & Quick Activities in Your Homeschool

  1. Saves Time: These activities don’t require a lot of planning, which means more time for other things—whether it’s life, working at home, self-care, or just spending time with your kids.
When time is limited, these quick activities are your best friend. Spend just a few minutes setting them up and watch your kids engage with hands-on learning!
  2. Reduces Overwhelm: If you’re feeling overwhelmed by trying to plan and do everything, quick and easy activities take the pressure off, making learning feel more manageable. You really don’t have to do it all! These activities help you take a step back, focus on the fun, and allow you to enjoy the learning process with your kids.
  3. Encourages Creativity & Exploration: Short and simple activities often leave room for more creative thinking, allowing your kids to come up with their own ideas or make connections to other subjects. Even 10-minute activities encourage creativity and help kids develop problem-solving skills. They’re not just completing tasks—they’re engaging with ideas in a fun, low-pressure way.
  4. More Flexible Learning: Quick and easy activities work for different types of learners and can be used in all types of settings—whether at home, outdoors, or even on the go. You can take these activities with you! Whether at the park, on a road trip, or during a lunch break at home, they’re easy to fit into any part of the day. For example, when I would take my little boys to my older boys’ soccer practices or games, I made sure to have a few quick, easy, and low-prep activities to work on. It kept them busy and engaged and I felt like I was using our time wisely. I’d print off some fun worksheets and put them on a clipboard, add a pencil bag full of crayons and such, and boom!

You can give quick, easy, and low-prep activities a try with my Free Fun Homeschooling 101 Quick Start Guide + Activity Cards. It has 18 unique prompts across 6 categories (math, science, creative, outdoor, physical, writing), these cards provide simple and fun ways to introduce engaging activities into your homeschool routine.

How These Activities Can Help You

1. Moms with Multiple Kids

  • Juggling multiple ages and learning needs can be overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to engage all your children at once.
  • How Quick Activities Help: Provide activities that can be adapted for different age groups, allowing older kids to assist younger ones. Easy group projects or games that involve teamwork are excellent because everyone is involved and learning together.
  • Activities that work for multiple kids at once can make a big difference! Try a family art project or a collaborative math game that older kids can guide younger siblings through.

2. Moms with Babies and Toddlers

  • Balancing homeschooling with caring for babies or toddlers is tough. It’s hard to manage structured lessons while keeping little ones entertained. I remember very well wearing my babies and then trying to keep them “contained” when they got to toddler stage. It felt like most of our homeschool time was trying to wrangle little ones!
  • How Quick Activities Help: Offer quick activities that can keep toddlers engaged (like sensory play or independent play stations) while the older kids focus on their lessons. These can be set up quickly and require minimal supervision. AND have some activities for your older kids to work on while you’re helping/chasing little ones.
  • You can set up a sensory bin or an independent play area for your toddler. This gives you a few moments to focus on the older kids, without worrying about them getting into mischief!
  • Also, I’ll be sharing about DIY Learning Stations for all ages very soon. I’m super excited about these ideas because they totally helped our homeschool and are so easy.

3. Work-at-Home Homeschool Moms

  • If you work from home, trying to balance running a business or managing other responsibilities with homeschooling your kids can feel like the ultimate juggling act.
  • How Quick Activities Help: Quick activities that don’t require much attention or preparation are perfect for when you need a few minutes to check in with work or make a call. These activities can be set up and left for a bit while you handle other tasks.
  • If you’re working from home, try setting up a quick activity for your kids that doesn’t need much supervision, like a puzzle or an art project they can do independently. It gives you time to work while they stay engaged!

4. Moms Who Don’t Feel Creative

  • If you feel like you’re not creative enough to come up with engaging activities or lessons that are fun, you are definitely not alone! I get emails all the time for ideas and tips.
  • How Quick Activities Help: Low-prep activities that don’t require a lot of planning or creativity are a major relief. And they can really help you feel both creative and fun!
  • No need to be an art expert or anything like that! Quick and easy activities like coloring sheets, scavenger hunts, or building challenges are perfect for those days when you’re not feeling super creative (or energetic).

5. Moms Using Boxed Curriculum But Wanting to Add Fun

  • Are you using boxed curriculum and feel like there’s little flexibility to add fun activities without disrupting the schedule or making things more complicated? I’ve heard this a lot! It’s a big reason that we are eclectic and don’t have a rigid schedule or curriculum to follow. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t still have some fun!
  • How Quick Activities Help: Your schedule doesn’t have to be derailed. Go with something simple by adding a related game, song, or short project to reinforce a lesson.
  • If you're using a boxed curriculum, add a quick, related activity that reinforces the lesson in a fun way—like a 10-minute science project or a simple game that ties into the topic you're covering.

6. Moms Who Feel Overwhelmed with Everything

  • Do you feel completely overwhelmed, especially because you’re trying to do it all? Like planning lessons, managing the home, making sure everything is “perfect”? Oh mama - you’re not alone!!
  • How Quick Activities Help: Low-stress, guilt-free activities that allow your kids to learn and have fun will not add to your load. Quick and easy activities can be a way to reduce the pressure and allow for flexibility.
  • When you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember that it’s okay to take a break. Quick and easy activities that require little prep can help reduce your stress and keep learning light and enjoyable.

7. Moms Looking to Reconnect with Fun Learning

  • Do you kind of feel like you’re not enjoying homeschooling anymore because it’s become more about checking boxes than encouraging a love of learning?
  • How Quick Activities Help: These activities bring fun back into homeschooling. Remember:  Learning doesn’t always have to be structured, and sometimes, the best lessons come from simple, spontaneous moments.
  • Quick and easy activities can remind you why you chose homeschooling in the first place—because learning can be fun, flexible, and enjoyable! Give yourself permission to have fun and experiment with these low-stress activities.

8. Moms Who Feel Like They Don’t Have Enough Resources

  • You don’t need fancy supplies to make learning fun. Quick activities like drawing challenges, math with household objects, or scavenger hunts don’t require any special materials, so you can dive in right away.
  • Another big thing can be when you feel like you don’t have access to the resources you need to make homeschooling fun—whether it’s your budget, finding the right materials, or even finding the time to go out and find things. Or maybe you’re roadschooling or living in a small space?
  • How Quick Activities Help: Low-prep activities often require minimal resources—just things you likely have around the house. Oh, and free or low-cost resources like printables or simple games work very well!

Myths About Quick & Easy Fun Homeschool Activities

  • Wondering if these quick and easy activities aren’t “real learning” or aren’t as effective as more structured lessons?
  • Like, are they really enough? The truth is, they can be just as impactful as a more traditional lesson, especially when they keep your kids engaged, curious, and having fun. And these activities aren’t meant to replace your curriculum or other resources. They’re more like enrichment and bonuses - a cherry on top of your learning adventures!

What do you think about quick, easy, and fun homeschool activities? And what are your go-to quick activities? I’d love to hear your ideas and tips!

That’s it for this episode of the Positively Homeschooling Podcast! But, remember - this is just the beginning of this series! Next time, I’ll be talking all about easy, low-prep, and quick homeschool activities for mornings so stay tuned for more fun, stress-free ideas!
