A Colorful Way to Have Fun with Peacocks

Are you getting ready for some Letter P activities with your students? Or maybe you are working in an aviary or bird theme? Perhaps you're collecting cool ideas for budget-friendly ways to enjoy screen-free time with kids?

My boys and I did this coffee filter peacock craft as part of our Letter P lessons during homeschool preschool. The boys had so much fun bringing their colorful peacocks to life. It was a delightful way to make learning about the letter "P" a hands-on, creative experience. Not only did we talk about birds and the letter "P," but the boys also loved how they could personalize their peacock with all sorts of vibrant colors which made it feel extra special.

This craft is also a great decoration. We hung our peacocks up around our homeschool space (a.k.a. dining room) and they added such a cheerful and colorful touch. You can also use for Peacock Day (or Peafowl Day)! I'm super excited to share how we made our peacocks and bonus ideas for adding special touches, too.

What You'll Need to Make This Peacock Craft

To do this project with your students, I suggest that you gather these supplies prior to starting. These materials will allow your peacock to look like the examples in the pictures in our tutorials.

  • Coffee filters
  • Washable markers
  • Spray bottle filled with water
  • Clothespins
  • Blue paint and paintbrush
  • Scissors

If you have time or would like to try some different ways to decorate your peacocks, glitter (either glitter paint for the clothespins or glitter glue for eyes, beak, and feather details) adds a sparkly effect. Tempera paint sticks (like Kwik Stix) are fantastic options in place of paint if you want to keep this project mess-free. Markers can also work well to color your peacock's body (clothespin).

How can I display the finished peacock craft?

The peacock can be hung up on the wall, used as a centerpiece for a nature-themed table, or displayed on a windowsill to brighten up the room. Also, if you make several peacocks, attach them to a string or piece of yarn for a colorful garland or banner.
