Easily Enhance Holiday Learning Fun with Christmas in France
How do you make the holidays special with your kids?
Last year, my boys and I had a blast learning about Christmas Around the World! And we plan on continuing the holiday learning fun 🙂
In previous years, I had wanted to include these types of Christmas homeschool fun activities into our holiday season but failed to plan and prep for it.
Finally, I got my act together and was determined to enjoy learning about how different countries and cultures celebrate Christmastime. Our plans and activities were fantastic ways to spend special time together during the busy holiday season AND boost our learning fun!
One of the best parts of our Christmas Fun Around the World studies is learning about not just Christmas Day but the celebrations of the season. For example, the boys and I were fascinated to learn about how St. Nicholas Day is celebrated in France (compared to other countries).
Oh, and the French Christmas tradition of a Galette des Rois for Epiphany (Fête des Rois)!
The boys and I all agree that our favorite part is learning and about trying traditional holiday foods from each country. We love reading about the types of foods, their preparation, and how they’re enjoyed. My boys were shocked to discover that oysters are part of a French Christmas!
Here are some popular French Christmas traditions to enjoy in the month of December (or whenever you decide to learn about these things in the coming year):
- Sapin de Noël (Christmas tree)
- Le Père Noël (Father Christmas)
- Foie gras
- Nativity scene
- St. Nicholas (and Père Fouettard)
- Yummy treats like:
- Bûche de Noël (yule log cake)
- La Galette des Rois
- Le Réveillon (Christmas Eve – December 24th)
Recommended Resources to Learn About a French Christmas
The boys and I found fabulous resources at our local library to learn about Christmas in France. We supplemented our studies with information from the France page on Why Christmas.
Here are some of the books that we used in our study plus a few other titles that we hope to add very soon:
