Add a Touch of Magic to Your Winter Fun
Winter is the perfect time to enjoy a fun project with your children. Colder temperatures and inclement weather can make it tough to get outside as often. A simple craft can be a wonderful way to spend time together and take creative play to the next level.
This snowflake wand craft is based on something that I would have been thrilled to have as a child - and I hope your kids love it!
I grew up in the Pine Barrens of South Jersey. I don't remember getting a lot of snow as a little girl. But when we did, it felt like a winter wonderland!
My home was part of a small neighborhood that backed up into a lovely section of woods, full of pine trees and rhododendron. Neighbor kids and I had walked through those woods so much that we had a bunch of paths to explore.
One of my favorite memories was when my best friend (Kara) and I met along one of those paths on a rare snow day. We were about 9 or 10 years old. The snow transformed our woods into a magical area! I remember singing and skipping along without a care in the world. And I remember that we both wished that we had a snowflake wand so we could recreate that day.
When the movie Frozen came out, I felt like I was transported back to that beautiful winter day with my friend. I just know that I would have had hours of imaginative play pretending to be Else with this snowflake craft wand.
Suggested Supplies for This Snowflake Craft
This DIY project uses just a few materials. If you want to exactly follow the steps in this tutorial, you will probably need to go out and buy (or order) some of the supplies. I'll also share ideas for ways to tweak this craft if you'd rather use what you have or something else.
This list of materials has the basic requirements for this craft:
- Wooden Snowflake
- Dowel

- Ribbon
- Rhinestones
These materials will make a sturdy final product. If you'd like a slightly different look or don't mind your wand being a little less sturdy, you could use:

- Markers
- Foam sheets
- Cardstock
- Sequins
- Washi tape
- Foam stickers
- Pony beads
- Glitter glue
How to Make This Snowflake Wand Craft
01
Paint the snowflake
Paint the wooden snowflake and allow it to dry. (If you want to paint both sides, paint one side, allow it to dry. Then, paint the other.)
You can use tempera paint sticks or markers if you'd like a more mess-free option.
02
Paint the dowel
Paint the dowel white (or other color). Allow time to dry.
03
Glue on dowel
Glue the dowel on the snowflake. Allow to fully dry.
If you'd like to reinforce the snowflake, use clear tape on the back.
04
Add rhinestone
Stick or glue a rhinestone to the center of the snowflake.
05
Add ribbon
Tie the ribbon around the dowel just below the snowflake.
Ideas for Making and Using Your Snowflake Wand
Before you begin this craft project with your kids, I encourage you to talk with them about their ideas. What colors would they like their snowflake wand to be? You could go traditional and have white and blues. OR think outside the box. Imagine a rainbow snowflake!
Your child may want to add fun extras to their snowflake or ribbon. You could add pony beads or wood beads to the ribbon. A touch of glitter glue adds a nice sparkly effect. Consider using a few pieces of ribbon and braiding it for an interesting touch.
How will your students be using their snowflake wands? Will their wands be a part of a costume for creative play? Or could their wands be used as part of a creative writing or drawing prompt?
