The Importance of Teaching Kids About Growth Mindset

Now more than ever, kids need to learn and practice growth mindset skills. Stressors like school, sports, activities, and just growing up place a lot of pressure on kids.

Growth mindset skills help kids sort through all of that and emerge stronger. Kids discover their unique gifts and talents, embrace who they are, and find they can tackle any problem that comes their way.

So, what are growth mindset skills? Carol Dweck is a pioneer of growth mindset and how it influences students. With her team, she discovered that our thoughts and beliefs have a powerful impact on performance, behavior, and how we deal with challenges.

Students have a natural tendency to have a fixed or growth mindset. Different factors may contribute to the development of one's mindset. To learn more about this research and findings (which applies to all ages!), I highly encourage you to read Dweck's book, Mindset.

The best thing about her mindset research:  You CAN learn and practice growth mindset skills, even if you have a fixed mindset! You don't have to struggle your entire life, thinking you're not good or smart enough.

Understanding a Growth Mindset

You may wonder if your child has a fixed or growth mindset. Or how to explain these concepts to your kids.

Maybe your child does well overall with growth mindset skills but really struggles with one or two areas?

I often get questions about growth mindset for kids. With my psychology and counseling background, I often have parents and family members ask me if growth mindset skills can help their kids.

My response will ALWAYS be:  Growth mindset skills can help ALL kids. (And adults, too!) Learning about mindset and how it affects functioning will help you help your kids and yourself 🙂

Great Tips & Suggestions for Using These Growth Mindset Quotes for Kids

So, how can growth mindset quotes for kids help in the process of teaching these fantastic skills?

These quotes contain powerful reminders of growth mindset qualities that help cultivate a positive attitude, like:

  • Positive thinking
  • Persistence
  • Perseverance
  • Embracing challenges
  • Resilience
  • Encouragement
  • Courage
  • Compassion
  • Trying new things

I carefully selected quotes that kids can relate to and learn from writers, political figures, athletes, and other well-known individuals.

You can decide with your kids on how to best use these growth mindset quotes. Here are a few of my ideas to use as a starting point:

  • Use for copywork. Your kids can work on handwriting while learning and memorizing these quotes. Let your kids pick a special notebook or journal to record these positive sayings. You can go down the list or cut up the quotes into strips, fold, place in a jar, and randomly select a quote to use that day or week.
  • Create positive posters. Your kids can add their creative touch to these quotes by writing them down on construction paper or cardstock. Once their growth mindset quote is complete, they can illustrate what the saying means to them or just add fun doodles!
  • Display as positive reminders. Cut the quotes into strips. Hang on your refrigerator, homeschool morning board, mirror, or other frequently visited areas.
  • Give your child a pleasant and positive surprise. After you cut up the quotes into strips, fold up the quote and place in a special area for your child, like a binder or as a bookmark. Such a fun way to inspire your kids as you reinforce a valuable lesson!
  • Pull out a quote when your kids are working on hard things or going through tough times.
