How to Make This DIY Pumpkin Playdough

If you haven't had the pleasure of making homemade playdough, you're in for a treat. It's fascinating to watch the transformation from sticky, gooey mess to smooth ball of color to play with your hands!

You'll need about a few minutes to gather the suggested ingredients (see above) and materials:

  • large cooking pot (or saucepan)
  • spoon (I prefer using a wood spoon. I find it more sturdy and less likely to have the playdough stick to it while I'm stirring.)
  • wax paper
  • sealable plastic sandwich bags (or other containers that can be sealed) for safe storage and to extend the life of your DIY playdough

Cook time for this playdough recipe is approximately 5 minutes. That's less than 10 minutes until you have fantastic playdough!

Tips for Making Your Playdough for All Sorts of Fun

I'm happy to share some of the things that we've tried and learned about over our years of making homemade playdough.

If you decide to use the orange food coloring (or other color) or have multiple kids using the playdough, I recommend dividing the dough into 6 portions. OR make a double batch!

Wait until the dough is completely cool before storing. This step helps prevent condensation from building up in the plastic bag (or other storage container).

Use one bag per color of playdough and/or per child - unless you don't mind a bit of mixing.

Vegetable oil can be used in place of canola oil in a 1:1 ratio.

⭐ Easily add some fun to your playdough with glitter. My boys and I LOVE mixing in some glitter. It makes the coolest effects and can add a neat holiday or seasonal touch.

Boost Sensory Play and More with Playdough

When using a material like playdough with children, I think it's wise to set clear rules and expectations. Also, it can fe super fun to provide kid-safe tools made for using with playdough, as well as small plastic toys.

Printable playdough mats (like our free fall set, emotions, and number playdough mats) can take your hands-on learning to the next level.
