Simple and Frugal Way to Brighten Your Holiday

Would you like an easy and fun activity for your kids to make their own ornaments? Maybe you'd like frugal craft for holiday fun? Or perhaps you need a quick project for letter of the week ("Rr")?

Well, this reindeer ornament craft is truly remarkable for all of those things and more!

Now that my boys are older, one of my favorite things to do is look at our "big" Christmas tree (we have several trees in our home - my boys LOVE to decorate for the holidays!) and see all of the homemade ornaments. We have such an amazing collection of DIY treasures to adorn this tree. It's always filled with adorable delights and such special memories.

Our collection contains ornaments made from all sorts of supplies and a variety of themes. Many of the crafts involve recycled materials, like cardboard, toilet paper rolls, and clothespins. This reindeer ornament craft (which some of my boys liked to transform into Rudolph!) was one of the first Christmas ornaments that I made with my oldest - and then with all of his brothers.

I had to recreate it and share with you. I truly hope that you and children have as much fun making and enjoying it as we did!

Suggested Supplies for This Reindeer Craft for Kids

This easy Christmas ornament craft uses only a few supplies. You may just have all of them in your craft stash! If not, you can pick these materials up at little cost at the store on or order online in a craft kit. Oh, and you can add a few extras (I'll share my ideas below) to take your reindeer to the next level if you have the time.

I suggest that you have these materials prepared so you'll be all set for craft fun with kids:

  • Cardboard
  • Clothespins
  • Brown Paint (or Brown Tempera Paint Sticks)
  • Red or Black Pom Poms (for the reindeer noses)
  • Googly Eyes
  • Twine or Ribbon
  • Paintbrush
  • Glue

Before starting your craft, decide if you'd like a Rudolph (with red nose) or other reindeer. If you don't have pom poms (or would like to try something different), you can use buttons or jingle bells.

Glitter glue or paint can add a sparkly effect to your ornament, too.

Ideas for Using Your Reindeer Ornament Craft

I think it's incredible how you can easily customize this simple craft or leave as-is and still have a lovely final product. Plus, you can enjoy this reindeer craft in a bunch of ways for holiday fun with kids. Need a bit of inspiration for making and displaying? Here are a few of my ideas:

Want to personalize your DIY reindeer? Consider using different colors of paint on the clothespins and cardboard. Markers and tempera paint sticks are other easy ways to customize. Glitter glue can also add a bit of sparkle to your project.

Create a bunch of reindeer and attach to string (or yarn) to make a banner. Hang that banner on a wall, fireplace mantle, or at the top of a doorway. Or string it on your Christmas tree!

Go on a DIY reindeer scavenger hunt! Hide your reindeer friends around a room or a level of your home. Play music and see who can find the most.

Make a decorative magnet with your reindeer. Adhere a magnet to the back of it. Use to add some adorable holiday decor to your refrigerator or magnetic white board.

Put a reindeer or two in a Christmas-themed wreath. You can also place in a holiday centerpiece.
