Have Sweet DIY Fun with a Paper Plate Fan
I love making crafts with my boys that we can actually use. It's so much fun to see our hard work and creative time turn into something useful.
Craft time has always been a big part of our summer homeschool fun. With a lot more wiggle room in our routine, the boys and I like to get out our art and crafts supplies for screen-free activities.
As the boys get older, crafts have become more complex. Most of the time, I just let them loose with their materials and look forward to when they share their creations.
When the boys were younger, I often led our craft time. And I'm so glad that I did! I went over my rules and expectations (especially for how to use materials and clean up). Now, I can let them go and know that they'll keep mess at a minimum.
Yesterday, Xman (my youngest) worked on a sort of mixed media craft. He used watercolor paints, coffee filters, paper plates, and cotton balls to make one of his favorite fruits - watermelon 🍉
It reminded me of this watermelon paper plate craft that I made with each of my boys when they were young. I decided to replicate this craft and Xman helped. We had a blast making it together. Sometimes simple crafts are the best crafts!

How to Make This Watermelon Paper Plate Craft
In just 4 simple steps, you'll have a delightful watermelon paper fan. Here are the steps to follow so you can make it with your kids:
STEP 1
Prepare the paper pieces.
Cut a paper plate in half and trace it on a piece of red paper and then a piece of green paper.
Trim the red piece so that the rounded edge is just a little smaller than the green page.
STEP 2
Make the wood craft stick X.
Glue two craft sticks into an X so that they overlap toward the bottom instead of in the center.
Glue the wide part of the X to the backside of one half of the paper plate.
STEP 3
Attach red and green pieces to the paper plate.
Glue the green paper to the paper plate so that the edges align. Then, glue the red piece of paper onto the green paper so that the straight edges align.
These pieces will be the red watermelon and the green rinds.
STEP 4
Cut out and glue black "seeds".
Finally, snip some black construction paper and glue the small pieces onto the red paper for seeds.
OR you can also glue real watermelon seeds to the fan.
Enjoy Your Paper Plate Fans!
The paper fans can be used for many different activities like cooling off during hot days or using them in pretend play.
Other creative uses include using them as wall art decorations, props for pretend theater plays or even making an instrument out of it. Oh, and these fans are perfect for celebrating National Watermelon Day (August 3)!
