As a homeschool mom who is trying to provide a quality at-home education, you may feel confused or unsure as far as where your child "should" be in terms of their reading level. You may also wonder how in the world you will ever be able to afford all of the books and elementary literature guides!

You want to meet your child where they are and help them enjoy the learning process. You also want to make sure that they are learning what they need to advance in their education.

Disclaimer:  I received three elementary literature guides from 7Sisters Homeschool for free to use and review. All opinions are honest and a positive review was not required.

For example, the first elementary literature guide that we used in our homeschool was for Freckle Juice by Judy Blume. The printable pack, recommended for use for end of 2nd grade/beginning of 3rd grade, included:

  • cover sheet
  • letter to parents on how to effectively use this literature guide
  • synopsis of the story
  • activities for story elements, sorting (setting and phonics), and vocabulary
  • Roll'em & Read'em, a fun game to practice spelling words
  • comprehension skills

Smiley (& Butterscotch) playing Roll'em and Read'em

Smiley (8) is a great reader but tends to dawdle. His homeschool reading can feel like it lasts forever! Smiley was excited to start Freckle Juice and enjoyed using this printable pack. He didn't fight me one time on completing this work-a feat unto itself!

I counted the total number of pages and divided them into realistic portions to tackle each day. Smiley never felt overwhelmed by the amount of reading or written work. His only complaint was that his two younger brothers, Bear and Xman, wanted to join in on the learning fun 😉  (Smiley is at that age where he wants to have some independent work. He graciously read the book to his brothers.
