The Need for Curiosity-Driven Learning in Our Middle School Science

Smiley (11) is making the transition to homeschool middle school science this year. I wanted to find a curriculum that best fits his needs, as well as our busy homeschool life.

Smiley is the middle child of our five boys. He's often been shuffled in our homeschool lessons between being bumped up with his older brothers or bumped down with his younger brothers. Combining ages and stages is just one of the ways that we make large-family homeschooling work 😉

This year, Smiley is ready for his own homeschool science. He wants to be more independent with his work, as well as take deeper dives into areas that capture his attention. Smiley thrives with interest-led learning 🙂

For example, Smiley adores art. Anything creative captures his attention. He'll tell you that his inspiration is Bob Ross. Smiley absolutely loves watching and rewatching Bob Ross episodes on Netflix. From this obsession inspiration, Smiley has developed a love of reading about artists, art theory, and experimenting with his own masterpieces.

From my experience homeschooling his older brothers, I know that the tween years can be a bumpy ride. Lots of questions about why we're studying a specific concept, lack of motivation, or resistance to doing work were all things that I wanted to avoid.

I went on the search for a homeschool middle school science curriculum that encouraged curiosity and discovery plus provided a framework with easy-to-use plans and lessons.

Here's why we went with Beautiful Feet Books and why it's a fantastic consideration if you'd like to ignite wonder in your homeschool middle school science.

This History of Science pack by Beautiful Feet Books is an amazing way to use curiosity-driven learning with your middle schooler.

Enjoying a Smooth Transition to Middle School Science

The change from elementary level learning to middle school can feel overwhelming-for students and parents!

Concepts are more complicated. Required reading intensifies. More writing is expected.

Throw hormones into the mix and you're in for a roller coaster ride like no other!

Having been down that road twice with my older boys, I knew that I needed to get smart about what homeschool middle school science program Smiley would use.

Beautiful Feet Books is helping Smiley (and me) make a smooth transition that leaves us both satisfied with the work being completed and our relationship staying intact 😉

Smiley began using A History of Science: A Literature Approach to Scientific Principles and Their Discoverers for Intermediate Grades this year and we couldn't be happier.

This History of Science Pack contains a variety of engaging resources. It's a literature curriculum with a hands-on approach incorporating a timeline and experiments.

Smiley's favorite part of A History of Science is the timeline. He loves art and coloring the timeline is soothing to him. He glows when he's assembling the timeline and chatting with me about Archimedes, Galileo, and The Wright Brothers.

The timeline component of A History of Science from Beautiful Feet Books is an excellent activity for reinforcing the literature and experiments for intermediate grades.

After reading the accompanying books, Smiley feels like these scientists and inventors are dear friends. The timeline activity, paired with his reading, solidifies what he's learned and how it all falls into place.

How Beautiful Feet Books Helps to Ignite Wonder in Your Homeschool Science

A History of Science from Beautiful Feet Books truly contains everything you need for a solid approach to ignite wonder in your homeschool science for the intermediate grades.

I think it's always helpful to read why both the student and the parent picked a curriculum. Here are our reasons why we're glad we went with A History of Science:

From the student's perspective:  Smiley said the best thing about A History of Science is learning about different scientists and their lives. "Like, did you know that Archimedes got so excited about his discovery with water displacement that he ran into the street naked?!? Can you imagine doing that? How embarrassing!"

Your child will be introduced to a variety of inventors and scientists through the literature-rich curriculum from Beautiful Feet Books.

Smiley also finds it interesting to learn about famous and not-so-famous scientists. The Picture History of Great Inventors has introduced him to Charles Babbage (English mathematician and inventor of the world's first digital computer) and Joseph Nicephore Niepce (Frenchman who made the first photograph).

Smiley is conducting an experiment on centripetal force found in The Way Science Works after reading about Galileo's discovery.

The experiments listed in the teacher's guide and explained in The Way Science Works have been tremendous hits. Smiley enjoys conducting experiments that draw both older and younger brothers to watch, participate, and learn. He feels cool and I love how it becomes a fun learning experience for all.

From this busy/large-family mom's perspective:  I have found the teacher guide and guided lessons for A History of Science to be invaluable. I just don't have the time to prepare detailed lessons and activities for middle school science. Everything we need for an easy-to-use/open-and-go science experience is there.

I also like that Beautiful Feet Books has a Charlotte Mason-Inspired approach. As an eclectic homeschooler, I appreciate getting some of the best of this approach easily laid out for us to enjoy.

Watch your child\'s eyes shine with delight as they devour books about scientists and inventors as part of A History Science Pack from Beautiful Feet Books.

The most wonderful part about using A History of Science with Smiley: I get to see my son's eyes light up with excitement when it's time to begin his science lessons. He reads ahead and chats with me about his discoveries.

These resources from Beautiful Feet Books are igniting a spark of interest that now has Smiley considering a career in science (or becoming a world-famous inventor!).
