Why Mazes Are Fantastic for Kids
Mazes might look simple but these printable activities have many benefits for kids. Plus, mazes are fun challenges that strengthen growth mindset skills.
A few of the benefits of mazes for kids include:
- Fine motor skills practice
- Problem-solving skills
- Boost to self-confidence
- Handwriting practice (for pre-writers and early writers)
In our homeschool, we celebrate Valentine's Day with a special holiday poetry teatime. I like to have a variety of activities for my five boys (ages 5-17). My youngest boy (Xman) enjoys using mazes like these holiday-themed ones as his older brothers work on activities like Crack the Code and Word Scramble.
Xman likes to change things up when he solves these mazes. Instead of making multiple copies, I laminate each maze for durability and to be reused.
Also, Xman enjoys using playdough snakes for these mazes and I find the laminating makes that experience more enjoyable. (This idea is great if you're using these Valentine's Day mazes at a learning station in your class or homeschool co-op!).
You can totally print on regular printer paper (US letter size), too!

Learning Techniques
- Encourage your younger students to use a finger to trace the maze on these printable worksheets prior to solving them
- Have your child quietly talk through how they are solving the maze. Why did they pick one direction over another?
- For the page with 5 different simple mazes, challenge your child to practice slow and fast finger control. Demonstrate by moving your finger through the maze in an exaggerated slow motion. Then, increase the speed and zoom through
Making Your Mazes Last
- Laminate the mazes for durability and to be reused. This step also makes using playdough or dry-erase markers a great option
- Don't have a laminator or laminating pouches? Pop a maze into a dry erase sleeve
- Store them with your Valentine's Day activities for next year
