What Are Footprint & Handprint Art Activities? (And Why You'll Be Glad You Did Them!)
Wondering what I mean by "footprint and handprint art activities"?
Well, to put it simply, footprint and handprint art is applying paint (or washable ink) to your child's hands and fingertips (or feet and toes!) then gently pressing onto paper.
Some reasons why handprint and footprint art can be super cool are:
- Kids of all ages can join in on the fun.
- Only a few supplies are needed.
- With a bit of prep work, mess (and stress) can be kept to a minimum.
- These activities are such simple ways to create special keepsakes.
- Your kids have so many fun possibilities for creative expression, even when you use templates.
Tips and Tricks for Enjoying These Footprint and Handprint Art Activities with Kids
Seem like a lot of holiday fun for kids but not so sure about the mess?
Here are a few tips and tricks to make your Valentine's Day handprint and footprint art experiences as relaxing and fun as possible:
- Prepare your materials ahead of time. Materials that I recommend include:
- Washable paint (or tempura paint, finger paint)
- Foam brushes
- Paint brushes
- Newspaper or plastic tablecloth for quick clean-up
- Hand wipes or baby wipes (to quickly wipe paint off hands and fingertips)
- Crayons and markers (to complete the black-and-white pictures and Thanksgiving phrases)
- Print extra copies of each of the Valentine's Day handprint and footprint activities (some kids want to make more than one 😉).
- Print these activities on white cardstock for added durability (and less chance of paint to bleed through).
- Show your kids the color examples of each handprint art and footprint art activity so they can get an idea of what a final project may look like.
- Remind your kids that each project is meant to be unique and doesn't have to be "perfect". Sometimes hands or feet twitch or move - and that's absolutely okay. Talk about how you can turn the work into an extra special creation.
- When your kids have finished their handprint and footprint art projects, prompt them to "freeze like a statue" (so you can wipe off their hands before they run around touching things!).
- A fun idea is to add googly eyes or paper feathers with a glue stick or other craft supplies for texture.
- Use different colors, if you like.
- For a fun project, transform your Valentine's Day art crafts into a card or poem. Turn into Valentine's Day placemats, too.
- Enjoy as educational activities, personal use, holiday preparations, and more.
