I am always on the hunt for new resources to help my boys get excited about learning. When we pulled our two older boys out of public school and had a period of deschooling, I discovered that learning does not have to be boring or stressful. In fact, I realized that my boys learn best when information is presented to them in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

I am thrilled to share a new resource that Bear (6) is using to supplement his homeschool math. has provided Bear with a fun way to review, learn, and practice math concepts and skills. Let's look at why Bear is enjoying his Level 1 Unit!

Your young learner can get extra practice with this fun math program.

Why We Are Using A Fun Math Program for Young Learners

Bear is a rather precocious six-year-old. He sits in on his older brothers' math lessons and often engages in discussions about concepts like multiplication, pre-algebra, and geometry. As much as Bear benefits from this multi-age environment, he has trouble consistently writing his numbers correctly, following directions, and self-correcting his work. Bear is very much an outside the box type of thinker who wants to invent his own number system, alphabet, and universe when given the opportunity.

With his entrance into "official" first-grade work, I wanted Bear to have extra practice with these areas, especially writing his numbers. Bear's previous experiences with homeschool math involved lots of hands-on learning with games, activities, and stories. I thought a workbook approach with writing exercises would be a great way to supplement his current math.

As a busy homeschool mom to five boys, I was drawn to the prepared kit that arrives at your house every month. No prep = happy mama! Also, I appreciated the easy to use format that would be simple for Bear and myself to implement.

One of the interesting aspects of this fun math program is how it teaches kids how to self-correct and fix their work. Unfortunately, this important academic skill has been lost in our busy homeschool schedule of late. I was excited to provide Bear with an opportunity to learn and practice this habit for work and tests.

Bear has a tendency to be perfectionistic in his homeschool work. His frustration level rises and he is more likely to give up when he writes a number wrong or makes a mistake in his work. Discovering Learning helps kids to know that it's okay to get a problem wrong and leads them through the process of correcting their work.
