Here's a fantastic free printable kit for making a diorama all about the life cycle of a plant!

As my boys get older, I've had to get creative and find new ways to make learning fun in our homeschool. I invite them to chat with me about some of our favorite activities and why we had such a blast with them. And many of those activities are science-related projects!

Our printable science diorama kits (like our frog life cycle, life cycle of a butterfly, water cycle diorama, and phases of the moon diorama) have been big hits in our homeschool adventures. We've loved pairing these projects with our lessons, as well as finding books at our local library.

The boys have been talking about starting a garden for a homeschool environmental project. I thought a plant life cycle project featuring diorama fun would be a wonderful way to extend their learning fun.

How to Make This Printable Diorama Kit

Once you print out these plant life cycle project worksheets, you'll see how easy it easy to make this kit!

I recommend printing these pages on white cardstock. Your plant life cycle diorama will be more durable and easy to work with. Oh, and I suggest printing out extra copies in case one of your students wants to make an extra diorama or accidentally tears a tab.

Here's a list of supply ideas that you can use to make this diorama:

  • scissors
  • glue or gluestick
  • tape (or double-sided tape)
  • coloring tools (if using the black-and-white version) like:
    • crayons
    • color pencils
    • fine-tip markers

I've found it best to make the project ahead of time. It makes it easier for me to explain to my boys, as well as break down the steps. Also, I like to have an example as I show the boys what I did. It's also interesting to hear their suggestions of how they'd like to create their own diorama!

You can make this life cycle of plants diorama as it is. OR you could find a box about the size of the diorama and place it in there.

The steps that my boys and I took to make this diorama are:

  1. Print out the diorama kit on white cardstock.
  2. Pick out which style you'd like to use (color or black-and-white).
  3. Color in background and pieces (if necessary).
  4. Cut out background and pieces.
  5. Assemble the background by folding in a forward direction at all dotted lines.
  6. Place glue on front part of each diorama background tab.
  7. Fold in all sections and adhere tabs.
  8. Use tape to reinforce tabs.
  9. Glue and attach diorama pieces.
  10. Add glue to tab of label and attach to top of diorama box.

You can use these plant life cycle printables for interactive activities. Chat with your young learners about the correct order of the various stages of the life of a plant. Encourage your older students to point out and explain it all to gain a better understanding of the process. Older kids can also write down the steps in a list or paragraph format.
