Make Reading Logs Fun for Kids
Boring.
Blah.
That’s how my boys feel about keeping a reading log.
In our state (Pennsylvania), we are required to maintain reading logs for our homeschool portfolios. And to be honest, we aren’t always very good about maintaining them.
My boys love to read, that’s not the problem. The issue is that we forget.
Why do we forget? It’s not that big of a deal to jot down what books the boys and I have read. In fact, we have our library check-out receipts to easily go through to retroactively write down our books.
The main reason we slack off with our homeschool reading logs is that it’s boring. On a college-ruled paper, a list of books looks meh.
And my boys and I like fun 😉
So, I decided to create a few fun printable resources to make maintaining our reading logs exciting and engaging.
This Dr. Seuss-Inspired Reading Log has the typcial columns for date and books read. Plus, it adds the cool feature of giving books ratings out of 5 stars. My boys love that stuff!
Fun Ways to Make This Dr. Seuss-Inspired Reading Log Special
This reading log is a wonderful addition to your Read Across America Week and Dr. Seuss Day celebration.
Kids love to share their opinions (at least my boys do!). Encourage your kids to give an honest rating on the book they read. After giving their rating out of 5 stars, use these prompts to guide their explanation:
- What was your favorite part of the book?
- Favorite character?
- Least favorite character?
- What special words did you find in the book? How could you use those words in your writing?
- Any words that you didn’t know the meaning of? Which words can we look up in the dictionary together?
These types of prompts are fabulous ways to get your kids chatting about their books. And these chats are lovely ways to connect 🙂
