A Simple and Special Bat Craft for Kids
When my oldest was in preschool, I was on the hunt for a simple bat-themed craft.
It needed to be something easy, cute, and mess-free. I wanted a fun way for him to create a few Halloween decorations during his afternoon quiet time. And I wanted something that he could do while his little brother was napping.
This yarn-wrapped bat craft turned out to be the perfect fit. It was super frugal using supplies that we already had. He had a blast making not just one, but several of these adorable bats.
When he was done, we hung these DIY bats up in our windows around the house. He was so proud to show off his Halloween handiwork!
As I was going through our homemade Halloween decorations bin, I found these cuties. I knew that I had to recreate them and share them with you!
Suugested Supplies for This Simple Kids Craft
My favorite thing about this bat-themed craft is that you really only need two materials. To easily get started with and enjoy this project, I recommend that you have:
- Bat template (use this free instant template download and print)
- Cardboard
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Black yarn (or any color you like)
- Glue
How to Make This Yarn-Wrapped Bat Craft
Print and use the template.
Start by printing out the bat template. Carefully cut along the lines of the printed bat shape. Place the paper template on a piece of cardboard and trace around it with a pencil or marker. Cut out the bat shape from the cardboard.
Wrap the first wing and head.
Begin wrapping yarn around one wing. If some yarn slips out of place, add a small dab of glue to hold it. Tuck the yarn end under the wrapped strands or glue it to secure. Move to the bat’s head and wrap yarn neatly around it.
Wrap the bottom, other wing, and middle.
Continue wrapping the yarn around the bottom of the bat’s body. Wrap yarn around the other wing, securing loose spots with glue as needed. Crisscross yarn across the batโs middle for a fun textured look. If small areas are still uncovered, glue short yarn pieces in place to fill them in.
Optional: Make the hanger loop.
Cut a small piece of yarn, form it into a loop, and glue it to the back of the bat’s head so itโs ready to hang.
