Plus, I wanted quiet time to mean something. I knew that it could be a time not only for me, but for my boys to learn and grow, too.
So, I tried some different ideas. And after a whole lot of trial and error, I discovered something amazing: Quiet time doesn’t have to be a punishment or consequence.
In fact, it can actually be an opportunity to give kids a chance to build independence, explore interests, and practice patience. And their busy grown-ups can take a moment to get something done or relax!
Now? Quiet time is a regular part of our day. It’s screen-free, stress-free, and essential.
What Quiet Time Actually Is (and What It Can Be)
Let’s clear something up first: Quiet time isn’t only for toddlers who’ve outgrown naps or moms who need a break (though both of those are completely valid). Quiet time can be a powerful an peaceful part of your day – no matter your child’s age or stage.
In our home, quiet time has become part of our routine. It’s not about being completely silent or super still. It’s about creating a calm space where kids can explore, play, and be without screens or constant direction.
And while they’re enjoying that time? You’re free to rest, reset, or take care of whatever you need.
So, what is quiet time?
- A screen-free + stress-free break in the day
- A time when kids engage in independent activities (think drawing, building, crafting, sensory bins, or puzzles)
- A simple way to practice self-regulation and patience without needing fancy tools or a ton of prep
- A chance for grown-ups to breathe, focus, or sip a cup of coffee while it’s still warm
And what is it not?

If you’re new to quiet time, you might be wondering, ‘Will this actually work for my kids?”. I get it. Starting something new (especially something that promises peace and quiet) can feel like a stretch.
Here’s the truth: Quiet time can work in your home, even if your kids are high-energy, you have an erratic schedule, or you have limited space. The key is to keep it simple, flexible, and realistic for your season of life.
Here are a few things I’ve learned to make quiet time successful:
- Start small: Don’t feel like you need to jump in and do a full hour. Even 5โ10 minutes of calm is a win, especially when you’re getting started.
- Keep it simple: No need for complicated setups or fancy supplies. Think coloring pages, printables, felt boards, or audiobooks. The best activities are open-ended, screen-free, and mess-free.
- Make it a routine, not a rule: Quiet time doesn’t have to happen at the same minute every day. It can shift with your family. But, consistency does make it easier!
- Create a relaxed and inviting space: A simple basket, tray, or blanket on the floor can become a quiet time zone.
- Manage your expectations: It won’t be perfect at first (or possibly ever!). There might be interruptions, questions, or a few flops. That’s okay! Like any routine, it takes a little time to stick.
