A Special Spring Way to Explore Nature

Spring can be such a magical time of year!

My boys and I love to get outside and experience all the magnificent changes taking place in nature. We live in Northwest Pennsylvania so it truly feels amazing when everything start to thaw out and turn green.

One of our favorite ways to celebrate Spring is to go for a hike on a nearby walking trail. We're close to a few entry points of Rails to Trails so go there as soon as we possibly can without sinking in mud. (In fact, we also plan to go for a hike on Celebrate Trails Day on April 23!).

To make our nature walks even more special this Spring, we're going to take along our new free Spring Walk Scavenger Hunt. The boys have it printed out and placed on a clipboard (with attached pencil).

There's so many cool prompts to look for that it will take us a few walks at least to find them all. Great motivation for getting outdoors even more!

Creative Ideas for Enjoying This Spring Walk Scavenger Hunt

This scavenger hunt with Spring nature themes involves your children coloring in the objects when seen or found. I suggest having a variety of coloring tools to pick from, like crayons, color pencils, and fine-tip markers.

My boys and I find this type of clipboard with storage area that opens on the side (not bottom - coloring utensils fall out too easily that way!) works well when we're learning on-the-go.

If coloring would be inconvenient when you're outside, no worries! Just make a pencil mark next to the object and color in later 😉

Also, I suggest printing this Spring walk scavenger hunt on white cardstock. Regular printer paper will work fine – my boys, however, get excited when doing this type of activity and have a tendency to accidentally rip the paper. Perhaps your kids are the same way?

If you’d like to use this printable scavenger hunt again and again, you can laminate it or place in a dry erase sleeve.

Tips & Tricks for Enjoying This Type of Scavenger Hunt

When going on this type of outdoor scavenger hunt, it can be helpful to keep a few things in mind:

  1. Be prepared: I recommend wearing a backpack that has essential hiking supplies, like water, small first aid kit, bug spray, and sunscreen. Nature guides for your local area are awesome additions, too.
  2. Keep it simple: Don't feel compelled to search over every square inch that you're exploring. Or explain it all in scientific detail. And you don't have to find each object right away. Stretch out your nature walks for activities to look forward to spending together.
  3. Make the most of the experience: Even if you're not an outdoorsy type, try to get into it for your kids. You can even tell them that nature walks aren't your favorite thing but you're stretching yourself with new opportunities.
  4. Think outside the box: Stuck inside (weather, illness, or other yucky)? No worries! You can still enjoy this Spring scavenger hunt by using it with books, nature documentaries, and videos.
  5. Add your own prompts: Before you set off on your Spring walk scavenger hunt, chat about the prompts. Include ideas the your kids have on the back (they can even create doodle to go along).
