Add Simple Hands-On Activities to Your Cinco de Mayo with Kids

If you're looking for easy ways to help your younger kids enjoy hands-on Cinco de Mayo fun, you'll love these printable playdough mats for your own fiesta.

My boys and I have had a blast learning about Cinco de Mayo (and Mexican culture) in our homeschool. It's a great opportunity to learn about the Battle of Puebla and Mexican independence, plus Mexican food and Mexican heritage. We've included a variety of activities, games, and books to boost our learning fun.

As another Cinco de Mayo celebration approaches, I started thinking about ways that I would have like to celebrate this holiday with my boys when they were younger. So, I decided to make more printable activities, like our Cinco de Mayo tracing worksheets and these playdough mats.

Tips & Tricks for Enjoying Your Playdough Mats

With this free printable pack of 15 free playdough mats featuring Cinco de Mayo, I suggest that you take these steps to extend their use (especially if you'll be using with multiple kids).

  • You can laminate your playdough mats OR use dry erase pocket sleeves so your kids can use these activities again and again!
  • Have your different colors of playdough ready. You can use your own playdough that's been store bought. Or you can use an easy recipe with simple ingredients for DIY playdough (then store in an airtight container).
  • Use dry erase markers to trace the Cinco de Mayo words.
  • Use those dry erase markers to color the Cinco de Mayo objects.
  • Challenge your kids to think of different Cinco de Mayo themes - and create their own objects on the back of the pages.

Cool Ideas for Enjoying These Playdough Activities

You can use these printable playdough mats with your kids in so many ways!

With the color mats, you can try to match your playdough to the colors on the Cinco de Mayo objects. Or get creative and use what you like or have.

With the black-and-white mats, use your imagination. Pick a variety of colors. Create a rainbow of playdough by mixing colors (my boys LOVE to do this!) and add.

You can roll the playdough in your hands back and forth to make "snakes" (that's what we've always called them). Or roll small balls.

Another thing to try is to place a large amount of playdough on the mat. Use a rolling pin to flatten. Then, use a dull knife or other tool to "cut out" the pieces. Great way to boost fine motor skills activities!

Oh, something fun to do is to use the black-and-white playdough mats for coloring fun! Print out extra copies to color in the Cinco de Mayo themes.

Pair these playdough mats with Cinco de Mayo books and other printables (like our activities pack, word search, color by number pages, and tracing worksheets).
