A Creative Way to Have Fun with Cookies
After sharing a few other cookie-themed activities recently (like our felt cookies and the cookie decorating activity tray) I was reminded of this super cute potato stamp cookie jar craft that was a big hit with my boys. Oh my stars, they had so much fun with it!
It’s one of those simple projects that turns something you already have (like a potato!) into a fun and creative activity. I love when we can keep it frugal and adorable. My boys thought it was hilarious to use a potato as a painting stamp. And they had even more fun when it magically turned into a chocolate chip cookie.
We ended up making little cookie jars to decorate our homeschool space. It would be fantastic in a classroom, playroom, or library, too. You can totally pair it with a read-aloud (like If You Give a Mouse a Cookie) or just do it for the pure joy of crafting.
What You’ll Need for This Cookie Craft for Kids
You don’t need much to make this cookie jar cuteness happen! Most of these supplies are probably already hanging out in your kitchen or craft stash. I’ve kept it simple and frugal because easy setup = more fun for everyone. Feel free to substitute (like using a circular sponge for a stamp) or adapt as needed to make it work for your crew:
- White cardstock
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Tan/brown paint
- Dark brown paint
- Potato (cut in half)
- Q-tip
- Paper plate or paint tray
- Optional: Other colors of paint or glitter glue to use as decorations
How to Make Your Potato Stamp Cookie Jar Craft
Cut Out the Jar Shape and Add the Lid Line.
Cut a large jar shape out of white cardstock. You can draw it freehand or trace around a jar template. Make sure there’s enough space inside the jar for stamping several cookies.
Use a pencil or marker to draw a horizontal line just below the top of the jar to separate the “lid” from the rest of the jar.
Stamp the Cookies and Add “Chocolate Chips”.
Pour some tan or light brown paint onto a paper plate or tray. Dip the flat side of a potato half into the paint. Stamp it inside the jar shape to look like a cookie. Repeat this step several times, spacing out the “cookies” as desired. Let the paint dry completely.
Dip a Q-tip into dark brown paint. Dab small dots or short lines onto each potato stamp to create chocolate chips.
