Find Out More About This Coordinate Graphing Pictures Set

This free printable set of fall coordinate graphing mystery pictures includes 8 activities (plus terms of use page and answer keys).

These fall math worksheets and answer key are in black-and-white.

There are 8 separate pages with directions for plotting out the points for the lines to make each image. The first page in the pack is a blank coordinate graph. You'll need to make 8 copies of this page (one for each fall mystery picture).

The autumn themes for these mystery pictures include:

  • pumpkin
  • turkey
  • acorns
  • mushrooms
  • leaves
  • sunflower
  • owl
  • ladybug

This graphing activity set is an incredible way to practice with coordinate pairs of whole numbers in one quadrant.

You'll find a coordinate graphing code with plot points (for example 5, 4) for each autumn coordinate graphing page. In this example, your student would move over from the center point (0,0) to the right to 5. Then, your student would move up 4, and mark the spot (known as plotting points).

This process continues for each line of the mystery picture. The images in this coordinate graphing set have the number of lines range from 0-25 lines.

Ideas for Using These Autumn Coordinate Graphing Activities

For these these math + art activities, you only need a few supplies. I recommend that you gather and have these tools available:

When your students have completed their work, a mystery picture with a fall theme will be revealed on each printable page. If time allows, encourage your kids to outline, color, or shade in the image. The answer key (provided in this free pack) shows the picture. Your kids can stick with traditional autumn colors OR think outside the box. I love to see what creative pictures my boys come up with!

My boys and I use a ruler as a guide when we mark off the plotting points. This step really helps with accuracy!

FAQs About These Coordinate Graphing Mystery Pictures

What is coordinate graphing?

Coordinate graphing activities are often used in math. These types of activities are all about plotting points on a graph using x and y coordinates. It's like a treasure map where you find and mark points that help create shapes, lines, or even secret pictures. Such an interesting way to explore math and unlock your creativity!
Khan Academy shares a helpful explanation of coordinate graphing with four quadrants.

What ages or grades are these coordinate graphing worksheets appropriate for?

Amazing question! I think it depends on where your student is in their math education.
Coordinate graphing is typically first taught in 4th or 5th grade. My boys have really enjoyed this part of their math time. They think it's a lot like playing Battleship.
Ultimately, you know your kids best. I suggest giving these free activities a try and see how it goes. If your students get discouraged or frustrated, hit the pause button and come back to it at a laster time.

What are some other ways that I can use these coordinate graphing pictures with my students?

I suggest that you talk with your kids about their ideas. My boys have had fun using the blank template to draw their own mystery pictures. Then, they made a graph of plot points for the lines. They gave their DIY coordinate graphing pictures to their brothers and me. We all had a blast!

More Fun Ways to Learn About and Use Coordinate Graphing Activities

Not sure how or when to use coordinate graphing activities with your students? No worries! Here are some ideas for enjoying these math activities in creative ways:

  1. Art time: Boost creativity by making images or designs using coordinate graphing. Your older kids can create their own shapes or patterns by plotting points on a graph (with one or more quadrants of the coordinate plane).
  2. Collaborative Projects: Have students pair up (pun intended!) in projects where they work together to create an image using individual coordinate plots.
  3. Outdoor Learning Fun: Move your learning adventures outdoors! Use sidewalk chalk to make a large coordinate grid and have students physically move to plot points, turning the learning process into an active and kinesthetic experience.
  4. Cross-Curricular Connections: Use coordinate graphing activities with other subjects, like science or history. Hint: Perfect for unit studies! For instance, plot coordinates to locate local, national, or historical landmarks on a map or plot coordinates in astronomy while learning about constellations.
