My oldest son (who is now 23) loved this show called Fireman Sam when he was little. He got the biggest kick out of it! He became obsessed with fire safety and fire trucks (as kids do with fun themes).
I put together a basic shapes craft featuring a fire truck for him and it was a huge hit. He was so proud of his creation and it gave us a fun way to talk about what firefighters do. And I loved that he was learning about shapes (circle, square, rectangle, trapezoid) in a hands-on way.
I’ve been going through a big bin with all of my boys’ crafts and when I found this one, I knew that I had to recreated it to share with you. I hope that your children enjoy it as much as we did.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making This Fire Truck Craft
1. Cut the shapes
- From yellow paper, cut a trapezoid for the siren.
- From red paper, cut one square and one long rectangle.
- With the white paper, cut one small square (for the window) and one rectangle (for the ladder).
- From black paper, cut three circles for the wheels.
This step is a great opportunity to talk through shape names with your child. To boost the learning fun, write down the shape names (square, rectangle, circle, trapezoid) as they cut or sort each piece.
2. Draw the ladder: Use a black marker to draw vertical lines on the white rectangle, spacing them evenly so it looks like a ladder.
3. Assemble your fire truck: It can help to arrange the pieces prior to gluing.
- Glue the red square to the left side of the red rectangle to form the truck body.
- Glue the white square onto the red square to make the driver’s window.
- The ladder (white rectangle) is glued onto the right side of the red rectangle.
- Glue the three black circles along the bottom edge for the wheels.
- Finally, glue the yellow trapezoid on top of the red square.
