Squirrel Activities: Fantastic for Fall and More!

My second oldest son (now away at college) has loved squirrels for as long as I can remember. As a little guy, he’d squeal with delight every time he spotted one. If he saw a squirrel in our yard, at the park, on a nature walk, or wherever we happened to be, he would get so excited and chat away about it. That love never faded. Even now, he sends me a squirrel picture at least once a week, whether it’s one he spots on campus or at a soccer field.

When he was young, I loved finding books, games, and activities built around whatever he (or his brothers) were obsessed with at the time – squirrels, axolotls, sloths, frogs, you name it. Themed activities based on a kid’s real interests are one of the best ways I’ve found to keep them engaged and learning without a fight.

So, it’s no surprise this squirrel-loving son thought these printables were pretty cool, even now. I hope your kids love them, too! These activities are awesome for fall fun and so much more.

What’s Included In This Squirrel Activity Set

This simple pack includes 3 pages for squirrel fun. Your kids can choose from a color or black-and-white version of squirrel craft (or enjoy both!). And there’s a DIY movement game dice to create and play with!

  • 1 page Build-a-Squirrel Cut-and-Paste Craft (color version)
  • 1 page Build-a-Squirrel Cut-and-Paste Craft (black & white version)
  • 1 page Squirrel Moves Activity Dice (fold-and-glue or tape template)

I recommend that you print the craft pages on white card stock for durability. OR print on regular printer paper and paste onto construction paper.

Build-a-Squirrel Cut & Paste Craft

This craft is all about fine motor practice disguised as fun. Kids cut out the squirrel body parts then glue (or tape) them together to build their own furry friend holding an acorn. It’s simple enough for preschoolers with a little help and independent enough for early elementary kids to do alone.

A few ways to use it:

  • Coloring twist: Use the black & white version first and let kids color their squirrel before cutting and gluing
  • Mix and match: Print two copies and let kids swap pieces to create silly squirrel combos (backwards tail, giant head, tiny body)
  • Extend the learning fun: Find books and videos about squirrels to learn more about these furry creatures
  • Group activity: For co-ops or classrooms, this activity works well as a table activity while other kids finish up other work because it’s low mess and requires little to no supervision

Squirrel Moves Activity Dice

Once little hands need a break from cutting and gluing, this dice gets bodies moving.

Fold and glue the template into a cube. Kids take turns rolling it to see which squirrel-inspired move they’ll act out.

A few ways to use it:

  • Combine with the craft: Do the craft first for quiet focus time, then roll the dice a few times to burn off the wiggles before moving on to the next activity
  • Brain break: Pull this out any time energy is dipping between subjects, after lunch, or mid-morning slump
  • Outdoor play: Take it outside and let the “climb your tree” and “chase” moves have more room to be big
  • Group game: In a classroom or co-op setting, have the whole group act out the move together instead of one at a time
