Why Gratitude Activities for Kids Matter
As a homeschool mom, I know how easy it can be to focus on academics. Core subjects (math, reading, writing) and all the things. But over the years, I’ve learned that there are so many other skills that matter just as much (if not more).
I want my boys to grow up confident, kind, and capable. And I want those positive skills to apply to school subjects and everyday life. That’s why I include things like chores, financial literacy, growth mindset, and gratitude.
These life skills don’t always come from a textbook. In fact, I’ve found that the best lessons happen when we talk, reflect, and create together. To help with that, I like using a variety of resources, with books, short videos, and printable activities (like this Gratitude Jar Worksheet). It’s such a simple way to slow down, connect, and encourage thankful hearts in a fun + hands-on way.
How to Use the Free Gratitude Jar Worksheet
One of my favorite things about this Gratitude Jar Worksheet is how simple it is to use and how you can make it your own! It’s perfect for homeschool, classroom, and a meaningful family activity. Here are a few easy ways to enjoy it:
- Print your preferred version (or both). You’ll find two options in the free set. There’s a version with prompts and a blank version for open-ended creativity.
- Set the scene. Find a calm moment, like during morning time, after lunch, or before bed. Turn on some soft music or light a candle if you’d like.
- Fill your jar. Kids can draw or write what they’re thankful for inside the jar (or in the heart shapes). Encourage them to think about people, places, small joys, and moments that make them smile.
- Talk about it. Take a few minutes to share what you each added to your jars. You’ll be amazed at what comes up when kids pause and reflect!
- Display or revisit. Hang your finished worksheets on a bulletin board, fridge, or wall. Start a Gratitude Gallery that you can add to each week.
You can also pair this activity with a favorite gratitude-themed book, journal time, or a short video about thankfulness.
Creative Ways to Extend the Gratitude Fun
Once your kids have completed their Gratitude Jars, keep the thankful vibes going. Enjoy simple + hands-on ideas that make gratitude part of your everyday rhythm. Here are a few easy ways to build on the fun:
- Make a Real Gratitude Jar: Grab a mason jar (or any container you have) and fill it with paper hearts or slips of paper. Each day, write something you’re thankful for and add it to the jar. At the end of the week or month, read them together and celebrate all those little blessings.
- Create a Glow with Gratitude Jar Craft: If your kids love creative projects, they’ll have a blast making this simple 3D paper mason jar craft. It’s a sweet way to let their gratitude shine! Color, cut, and curve the paper jar, then place it over a battery-powered tealight to make it glow. (You can grab this printable craft inside my Gratitude Journal for Kids Pack.)
- Read & Reflect: Pair your worksheet with a gratitude-themed picture book. A few of our favorites are Thankful by Eileen Spinelli and Gratitude Is My Superpower by Alicia Ortego.
- Keep It Going All Year: Gratitude doesn’t have to be just for Thanksgiving! Use your jar worksheet any time your kids need a mindset reset or a gentle reminder of the good around them. Add it to your morning basket, SEL lessons, or family quiet time.
