Hands-On Fairy Tale Fun for Kids

With the Jack and the Beanstalk Preschool Enchantment Unit Study, I wanted to include a hands-on craft that was both fun and frugal. I remembered this sweet beanstalk project that I had done with my boys when they were little!

It was such a hit back with all of them. I loved how simple it was to put together with supplies we already had around the house. We had a blast making it together and using it for a DIY story prop.

The boys loved using their beanstalks to retell the fairy tale in their own words. It was such an easy and creative way to boost narration.

Creative Ideas for Enjoying This Frugal Craft

  • Storytime fun: Read Jack and the Beanstalk together after making the craft. Use it during the story and act out parts using the craft!
  • Add extra touches: Encourage your kids to get creative! They can draw Jack climbing the beanstalk, cut out a golden egg, or even make a tiny harp from paper. Oh, and your children can build a castle out of blocks or cardboard to sit on top of the cotton clouds!
  • Add a little STEM: Talk about how real beanstalks grow. Plant a bean seed in a cup and observe its growth over time. Another cool thing to try is to place a seed on a damp paper towel and put in a clear plastic bag. Observe what happens to blend literacy and science!
  • Enjoy as part of fun themes: This craft is a great addition to a fairy tale-themed week or learning center. It’s easy to prep, engaging, and great for quiet + purposeful play.

Don’t forget the photos! Take a picture of your child holding their beanstalk. It makes a sweet keepsake and a fun way to look back on their storytelling adventures.
