A Super Fun Way to Explore Nature

Want an easy yet engaging way to get your kids excited about nature?

Try an outdoor-themed scavenger hunt!

When you pair the excitement of a scavenger hunt with observing and discovering different parts of nature, you're taking learning to the next level.

And this minibeasts scavenger hunt is an excellent way to enjoy this type of activity with your kids.

What are minibeasts? Great question! According to Minibeast Wildlife, minibeasts are "small animals that do not have an internal skeleton. They are scientifically known as invertebrates." TheSchoolRun also provides some awesome information and pictures to learn more about minibeasts.

My younger boys LOVE to search all around our yard for all sorts of things, like sticks, mushrooms, and other "treasures". When they find little critters like minibeasts, they're absolutely ecstatic.

I thought it would be fun for my boys (and hopefully your kids, too) to go on a minibeasts scavenger hunt!

Creative Ideas for Enjoying This Minibeasts Scavenger Hunt

This scavenger hunt with nature themes involves your children coloring in the minibeasts when spotted or found. It can be a great idea to have a variety of coloring tools to pick from, like crayons, color pencils, and fine-tip markers.

My younger boys and I find this type of clipboard with storage area that opens on the side (not bottom - coloring utensils fall out too easily that way!) works the best when we're learning on-the-go.

If coloring would be difficult when you're outside, no worries! Just make a pencil mark next to the minibeast and color it in later 😉

Also, I suggest printing this minibeasts scavenger hunt on white cardstock. Regular printer paper works fine. My boys, however, get rather excited when doing this type of activity and have a tendency to accidentally rip the paper. Perhaps your kids are the same way?

If you’d like to use this printable scavenger hunt again and again, you can laminate it or place in a dry erase sleeve.

Tips & Tricks for Enjoying This Type of Scavenger Hunt with Your Kids

When going on this type of outdoor scavenger hunt, it can be helpful to keep a few things in mind:

  1. Learn about minibeasts with your kids: Read books and watch educational videos about these little creatures.
  2. Be prepared: You can carry nature guides and other materials to help you identify the minibeasts that you find.
  3. Keep it simple: Don't feel compelled to search over every square inch that you're exploring. Or explain it all in scientific detail. And you don't have to find each minibeast right away. Stretch it these activities to look forward to spending time together.
  4. Make the most of the experience: Even if you're not an outdoorsy type, try to get into it for your kids. You can even tell them that minibeasts aren't your favorite things but you're stretching yourself with new opportunities.
  5. Think outside the box: Stuck inside (weather, illness, or don't have a lot of time)? No worries! You can still enjoy this minbeasts scavenger hunt by using it with books, nature documentaries, and videos.
  6. Add your own prompts: Before you set off on your scavenger hunt, talk about the prompts. Include ideas the your kids have on the back (they can even create doodles to go along).
