Our Story with Number Fun for Preschool At Home
I’ve always had a special place in my heart for math. There’s just something so satisfying about patterns, numbers, and problem-solving!
When I started homeschooling my oldest in a relaxed and flexible way, I knew I wanted to pass on that love for math in a way that felt fun and natural. So, I began collecting simple and engaging activities we could enjoy together at home.
His little face would light up as we counted snacks, sorted leaves in the backyard, and clapped along to silly number songs. We played with patterns using blocks and beads and made number crafts with googly eyes and glitter. I looked for everyday moments that we could turn into math magic.
Over the years, I’ve had the joy of repeating those positive experiences with all five of my boys. It’s been really cool to see how each one has connected with numbers in their own unique way. And I’ve learned so much about what really helps young kids enjoy math and feel confident exploring it. - Start with What You Have: You’d be amazed at how many math tools that you probably already have in your house. Use snacks, toys, laundry, nature finds—anything your child can count, sort, or group. No need to overthink it.
- Add Music & Movement: If you have a preschool age child, you know how much they love songs and silly motions. Try number songs like “Five Little Ducks” or “Ten in the Bed”. Use fingers, stuffed animals, and exercises like jumping jacks to bring the numbers to life.
- Mix in Creativity: Encourage your preschooler to explore numbers through crafts. These number preschool activities can be simple like painting numbers, decorating with stickers, or creating collage-style number posters. It helps them see numbers as fun and familiar.
- Read Math-Inspired Books: Browse your home library or take a trip to your loccal one. There are tons of amazing picture books that weave numbers into stories. Reading about numbers makes math feel natural and accessible.
- Keep it Light and Playful: The goal here isn’t perfection—it’s exploration. If your preschooler isn’t interested in a number activity one day, no worries! Follow their lead and try again at a later time.

- Dot marker number activities—great for one-to-one correspondence and hand control.
- Number puzzles and clip cards for matching numerals to quantities.
- Playdough mats with numbers to squish, trace, and decorate.
- Color by number printables are more easy ways to practice numbers and build fine motor skills.
Print a few activities and keep them in a dry-erase sleeve or folder for quick and easy review sessions.
- Crafty Number Fun:
