How to Make Your Paper Plate Turtle

Prepare the paper plate and paper pieces.

Paint the back of a paper plate green and let it dry. This part will be the turtle’s shell. From dark green construction paper, cut out four legs, one head, and one tail.

Make and add the face and paper pieces.

Use a black marker to draw two eyes on the turtle’s head, or glue on googly eyes for extra fun. Glue the legs, head, and tail to the underside of the paper plate so they stick out around the edges.

Make the light green paper pieces and assemble the turtle shell.

Cut out several small shell shapes (like hexagons or circles) from light green construction paper. Glue the shell details onto the painted plate to create the turtle’s shell pattern.

Tips for Enjoying This Project for Kids

  • Keep it simple: Basic shapes work well. There’s no right or wrong way to make this craft.
  • Pre-cut pieces for little ones: If your child is still building scissor skills, have the legs and shell shapes ready to go.
  • Use whatever green you have. Paint, markers, crayons, tissue paper… anything works.
  • Try a no-paint version: Cover the plate with green construction paper if you want a completely mess-free option. Or use tempera paint sticks (like Kwik Stix) for a cool alternative.
  • Let kids personalize: Spots, stripes, or zig zags – anything goes!
