Learning About Constellations Can Be Fun!

If your kids are interested in finding out more about constellations, get ready for some amazing learning fun!

As part of our Harry Potter Fun School, my boys and I are studying Astronomy. Just one book about constellations piqued our curiosity and sparked an interest to dive deeper into this subject area.

We're learning about science, history, math, and more. The study of constellations has been a fascinating addition to our homeschool learning adventures.

Our homeschool area (a.k.a. dining room) has quickly been taken over with resources on Greek and Roman Mythology, famous inventors, the solar system, and scientists.

To encourage their learning about this topic, I made free constellation cards and gathered some fantastic resources to help my boys on their interest-led deep dive 🙂

Awesome Resources for Boosting Learning Fun About Constellations

When my boys get excited about a topic, I go on a search for quality resources that engage, explain, and extend their curiosity.

First, I look for books that are visually appealing and full of facts. Then, I hunt for games and activities for interactive fun. I usually wrap up my search with tools and instruments for hands-on learning that make the concepts come to life.

Oh, and we're even adding art to our constellations fun! ChalkPastels has these super cool Look Up! Summer Night Sky lessons as part of the Summer Camp Video Art Lessons Clubhouse Edition

Here are a few of the constellation books that my boys and I have enjoyed or plan on using:

Home Science Tools is where I found the tools and instruments to make our constellations studies come to life.

In the free Home Science Tools Learning Center, we've enjoyed Astronomy: Moon & Constellations. Includes a neat project for learning about moon phases, too 🙂

Our latest addition to our homeschool science fun has been this Celestron Tabletop Telescope. Oh my stars! This special piece of equipment has already turned our constellation studies into something magical.

We've found constellations and so closely observed the moon that it felt like we could touch the craters!

This Celestron Tabletop Telescope from Home Science Tools is an excellent tool to boost learning about constellations & more.

Creative Ways to Use These Free Constellation Cards

I've discovered that my boys learn best when they keep their hands busy. As I read aloud from books, my boys prefer to doodle or do activities related to what they're listening to.

These free constellation cards were created to give my boys some hands-on activities that reinforce what they've been learning.

You can customize how you use these constellation cards with your kids. If you've got a creative idea, give it a try! (And please let me know what it is and how it worked. I love finding new ways to make learning fun 🙂 )

A few tips and ideas for using these cards include:

  • Print on white cardstock and laminate the cards
  • Use dry erase markers to trace the constellations and practice writing the names
  • Use Wikki Stix to reproduce the constellations
  • Print out 2 copies of the cards and play a constellations memory game
