Is It Worth It to Teach Cursive Writing to Your Kids?

I kind of feel like I've been in a homeschool bubble. Not that I'm complaining 😉

Since I pulled my 2 older boys out of public school, I haven't stayed too up-to-date in that world.

I didn't realize that there was this debate over teaching cursive writing to kids.

Or that it's not a requirement for public schools anymore (well, in 41 states).

In fact, The World from A to Z (our favorite homeschool news source) recently shared some interesting information about this debate about the worthiness of learning cursive.

I guess you could use the word shocked to describe my reaction. Sometimes I'm glad that I live in my introverted lil' world under a rock in my cave!

Although I didn't care for cursive writing lessons when I was in public school (my second-grade teacher, an ex-nun who liked to use a ruler for correction, could attest to that), I never questioned the importance of learning it.

Or why I would teach it in our homeschool.

When I look back on my experience (however negative it was), I realize that I gained SO much from learning how to read and write in cursive. Essential skills like:

  • Being able to provide a signature on a legal document (and initial with first letter of their names)
  • Relishing in the ability to read a historical document
  • Enjoying a modern cursive font when scrolling through Pinterest or other social media platform
  • Reading advertising with cursive writing
  • Having the ease of writing in cursive in my journal, with a delightful flow of letters that just glide out of my pen

I think it hit me when my second boy (Professor) requested to learn cursive. He's our history buff and wanted to make sure that he could read historical documents. (He had asked me about that "fancy" writing on the Declaration of Independence AND on my graduate school diploma.)

My oldest had a basic grasp of cursive writing from his brief stint in public school. I figured that it was worth it to expand upon his learning as I taught one of his younger brothers. And I'm so glad that I did...

The Benefits of Learning Cursive Writing for Kids (& When to Start)

I mentioned a few of the benefits of knowing how to read and write your alphabet letters in cursive writing. Although my cursive looks more like chicken scratch, I'm still very grateful to have those abilities.

And I wanted to make sure my boys enjoyed the same. Abilities, not chicken scratch.

Cursive writing practice helps develop fine motor skills.

I've also noticed a huge improvement in my boys' print handwriting after learning cursive. (You can find out more about the 10 best handwriting resources here.)

In general, it's recommended that students learn cursive around the age of 8. You know your kids best - if you think that they're ready earlier, go for it! Or wait. There's no rush. These cursive practice sheets will always be here 😉

When your kids are learning cursive letters, I suggest including a variety of methods.

Expose your kids to the alphabet in cursive with things like worksheets or other cursive handwriting resources.

  1. Hands-On Cursive Practice:
    • Encourage your kids to trace the cursive letters on paper with their fingers.

5 Top Tips for Successfully Using These Alphabet Cursive Worksheets

Cursive writing doesn't have to feel overwhelming or hard. With a few suggestions, your kids will ready and eager to go.

Here are a few tips for making the experience more successful and enjoyable:

  • Add a color dot to point out where to start on the cursive practice page. Use a marker or crayon. Your kids will appreciate it!
  • Demonstrate how to make the strokes, especially for a tough upper case letter like cursive Z or cursive F. It's a great way to help kids as they develop their cursive writing skills.
  • Encourage your kids to use the back of the paper of these free cursive writing worksheets for more practice. Lines can simply be made with a ruler. Great ways to get more practice in and conserve paper.
  • You can store these alphabet cursive worksheets in a binder. Or, if you find that you need to homeschool on-the-go, get a clipboard that provides storage and a neat workspace.
  • Help your kids learn their signature. Such an essential skill! Demonstrate how to connect cursive letters, especially their name (first and last), for lower case and capital letters. Learning how to write their own names in cursive is such a confidence booster, too.
