Well, you're going to love this delightful dinosaur egg craft that moves!
When boy #2 (who's now in college) was little, he had many interests. Two of his favorite things were trains and dinosaurs. We'd have conversations with his older brother about favorite dinosaurs. He thought Triceratops was the best while my oldest thought Tyrannosaurus Rex was amazing.
To help them explore these interests and spark creativity, we would go to the library and bring home all sorts of dinosaur-themed books. The boys would ooh and aah over dinosaur facts and stories. After our reading time, I often would lead them in a simple activity, like this interactive dinosaur egg craft.
Recommended Materials for This Dinosaur Craft
To get started with this project, you'll need to gather some supplies. If you're working with younger children or don't have a lot of time, I encourage you to go through the steps found in the tutorial below and determine if you'll need to do any of the work ahead of time.
- Craft foam sheets (any colors, for the eggs)
- Dinosaur stickers or cutouts
- Scissors
- Glue
- Wooden clothespins
- Pencil or marker
- Optional: FREE printable dinosaur eggs and dinosaur templates and white cardtock to print them on

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making Paper Dinosaur Eggs
Draw the Egg Shape:
Using a pencil or marker, draw an oval egg shape on the craft foam. Add a jagged, cracked line in the middle to make it look like a hatching egg. Hold the clothespin up against the egg to estimate the correct size. OR use our FREE printable templates to trace or use!
Cut out the Egg Shape:
Cut the egg shape out and separate it along the cracked line into two halves.
Attach the Egg Halves:
Glue one half of the egg onto the top part of the clothespin and the other half onto the bottom, making sure they align when the clothespin is closed.
Add the Dinosaur:
Glue a small dinosaur sticker or cutout onto the back side of the clothespin so that it remains hidden when the egg is closed. If needed, trim off any parts of the dinosaur that stick out in the front.
Hatch the Egg!
Open and close the clothespin to see the dinosaur "hatch" from the egg.
Frequently Asked Questions About This Dinosaur Egg Project
This craft is great for kids aged 3-8. Older kids can also enjoy it by adding their own creative twists, like decorating their eggs with additional details. Younger children may need help with cutting out the eggs (and dinosaurs if using the free printable templates).
The clothespins can be glued directly to the paper or taped onto the paper to create the egg. If you want a stronger attachment, you can use craft glue or a hot glue gun (with adult supervision).
While clothespins are best for this craft (fun for that cracking open effect), you could try using popsicle sticks or small wooden dowels as an alternative. You could even use two unsharpened pencils!
Creative Ideas for Making and Using Your Dinosaur Activities
Want to take your DIY dinosaur eggs to the next level? Customize them! You can use markers or crayons to add details. Glitter glue can provide a sparkly effect. Washi tape in different patterns and colors can be wonderful (and is easy to put on and take off in case you need to move around).
