DIY Slime is SO Much Fun for Your Kids and You!

It's so much fun finding and incorporating hands-on ways to make learning fun for my boys. I love to try all sorts of crafts and activities. Playdough and glitter don't scare me 😉

But, slime?

Well, I admit that I was uneasy about this ooey-gooey creation at first!

A few years ago, my boys were begging me to make slime. I cringed. It seemed like that stuff would get all over the place and stuck in carpet, on furniture, and in hair.

But, they persisted and I decided to give it a try. With a few simple and clear expectations, slime can really be an amazing addition to learning fun and life.

After testing out all sorts of DIY slime recipes, I'm ready to share our favorites. And I'm thrilled to share this slime with one of my boys' favorite themes - SPACE!

Tips and Tricks for a Fun Slime Time with Kids

It's a very good idea to set clear rules and expectations before you let your kids loose with slime. A few tips are:

  • designate a specific area to use your slime
  • talk about what tools, containers, and accessories are allowed (and which ones are not)
  • set a time limit (if you have a busy day)
  • slime stays in your bubble (that's what my boys and I call about a one foot area around each person - so no slime "mysteriously" ends up on a sibling, pet, or parent)
  • show how to care for and store your slime

Think outside the box as you make your slime. What are some other small things (instead of glitter) that you could add to the slime? How can you use the slime with different learning themes?

Do your students want to try a variety of colors for their space slime? Go for it! It's your DIY slime time so make the most of it 😊

Here are some of the simple ways that my boys use slime during our homeschool time because it's a great way to keep hands busy, especially during read-aloud time:

  • Use a large plastic tray to contain the slime mixture and any accessories being used
  • Keep the slime in a bowl or on a plate
  • Place some of the slime in a small plastic bag and seal - fantastic learning tool when placed on hard surface to practice forming letters and numbers!
  • Tape that small plastic bag to a window and use the same way to practice handwriting and math skills
