Slime CAN Be Fun for Your Kids and You!
I LOVE incorporating hands-on ways to make learning fun for my boys. I don't shy away from stuff like playdough or crafts.
But, slime?
Well, I admit that I was a bit apprehensive about this ooey-gooey material at first!
When my boys started begging me to make slime years ago, I cringed. Wouldn't that stuff get all over the place - like stuck in carpet, on furniture, and in hair?
Well, I found with some simple and clear expectations that slime can really be a sensational addition to learning fun and life.
After years of making and trying all sorts of slime recipes, I'm finally sharing our favorites. And I'm super excited to share this slime with one of my favorite themes - MERMAIDS!

Tips and Tricks for Your Slime Time with Kids
I highly recommend that you set clear rules and expectations prior to using slime with your kids. A few suggestions are:
- have a designated play area
- decide what tools, containers, and accessories are allowed (and which ones are big no-nos)
- set a time limit (if you have a busy day)
- slime stays in your bubble (that's what we call about a one foot area around each person - so no smile mysteriously ends up on a sibling, pet, or parent)
- demonstrate how to care for and store
I encourage you to think outside the box as you make your slime. What are some other small things (instead of glitter) that you could add to the slime?
Do your kids want different colors of mermaid slime? Go for it! It's your DIY time so make the most of it.
Oh, and I wanted to share some of the simple ways that my boys have used slime during our homeschool time because it's a great way to keep little hands busy, especially during read-aloud time:
- Use a large plastic tray to contain the slime mixture and any accessories being used
- Keep the slime in a bowl or on a plate
- Place some of the slime in a small plastic bag and seal - very cool learning tool when placed on hard surface to practice forming letters and numbers!
- Tape that small plastic bag to a window and use the same way to practice handwriting and math skills
- These mermaid activity sheets are perfect for laminating (or placing in dry erase sleeve pockets) for "decorating" with our mermaid slime
