Easily Encourage Creativity in Your Tweens & Teens This Summer

Finding a way to help your tweens and teens spend their summer can be a challenge.

Often, adolescents want to "just chill" or "do nothing" in the summer. Although appealing (and a LOT easier on parents), this option usually isn't viable.

As a well-intentioned parent, you want to help your tween and teen wisely manage their time in the summer. But, if you're like me, you feel like you're in between a rock and hard place.

Push too hard and you're a meanie.

Don't do enough and you worry that your tween or teen isn't doing enough.

A simple way to encourage a fun project or hobby is with a photo challenge.

This type of activity is a wonderful way to both help your older kids enjoy a relaxing activity yet feel a bit of challenge.

Plus, your tweens and teens will be giving you a glimpse into how they see the world - such cool ways to spark conversations and more!

And you don't need a fancy-schmancy camera. A smartphone (which most older kids have) works just fine 😉

Creative Ideas for Enjoying This Free Summer Photo Challenge

This printable photo challenge with Summer nature themes has your tweens and teens marking off objects when they've taken a picture (that they would feel proud to post on social media OR submit to a competition).

To mark off the prompts, your tween or teen (or family member) can use a pencil, pen, or marker. Small circle label stickers work well, too.

Also, I recommend printing this Summer photo challenge on white card stock. Regular printer paper will work fine but you'll find that card stock is more durable.

If you’d like to use this printable Summer photo challenge again and again, you can laminate it or place in a dry erase sleeve (and use dry erase markers).

Encourage your tweens and teens to get creative these photo prompts. And they can choose to focus on one or two prompts at a time or just take pictures as they come across these items.

Tips & Tricks for Enjoying This Type of Photo Challenge

When going out on this sort of picture experience, you'll find it helpful to keep these things in mind:

  1. Be prepared: I recommend using a digital camera. The ability to shoot, edit, and delete is both comforting and creative.
  2. Keep it simple: Don't feel like you have to get super complicated. Often, the most basic picture (even black-and-white) is the best.
  3. Make the most of your photo adventure: If you have the pleasure of going out and taking pictures with your tweens and teens, soak up every minute. Try not to dwell on specifics. Just enjoy the moment!
  4. Think outside the box: And talk with your tweens and teens. Get their feedback. Where do they think they should shoot the pictures? And how?
  5. Add your own prompts: Before you go off on your Summer photo challenge, talk about the prompts. Make sure to include ideas that your older kids have on the back.

If your tweens and teens are new to photography, you can find amazing tips and tricks by searching the internet and watching YouTube videos.
