A Fun and Creative Science Activity

Looking for an easy way to learn about the water cycle? Well, here's an awesome free printable activity to help you make a diorama all about the water cycle.

Over the years, my boys and I have enjoyed many different resources and activities for learning all about the importance of the water cycle. Most of our favorite homeschool fun activities involve a hands-on element to them, and this printable diorama kit that focuses on the water cycle is perfect for the job!

We've been having so much educational fun with our other printable diorama kits, like our life cycle of a butterfly, frog life cycle, and life cycle of an apple tree diorama set. When our homeschool science adventures led us to the water cycle, I knew it was time for a printable diorama project!

How to Make This Printable Water Cycle Diorama

I would suggest printing these pages onto white cardstock. This step will help your diorama be more durable and easier to put together. Make sure to print out extra copies just in case you need to make an extra - or if a piece gets torn or messed up during the creation process.

You can make this water cycle diorama with the pieces included in this kit. OR find a box (a shoe boxes work perfectly) and place your diorama inside.

Here is a list of supplies you’ll need to make your diorama:

  • scissors
  • glue or gluestick
  • tape (or double-sided tape)
  • crayons, color pencils, and fine-tip markers (to finish the black-and-white pieces)

I have found in the past that it’s best to do the activity ahead of time as it makes it easier to break down the steps and demonstrate with my kids. I also like having an example to show them and to get their ideas on how they would create their own.

These are the steps that my boys took in making their dioramas:

  1. Print out diorama kit on white cardstock.
  2. Cut out background and pieces.
  3. Assemble the background by folding along all dotted lines.
  4. For the two bottom pieces, fold down the sides and use tabs to glue together.
  5. Glue the two bottom pieces together in the middle.
  6. Use tape to reinforce tabs wherever you'd like.
  7. Fold the mountain and attach the two sides with glue. Then, fold the bottom of the mountain up and adhere.
  8. Glue and attach diorama pieces.
  9. Add glue to the labels and adhere to your diorama.
