A Brilliant Way to Learn About the Life Cycle of a Butterfly

Want an easy yet excellent way to extend the learning fun about the butterfly life cycle? I'm so glad you're here! I've got a fantastic free printable activity for making a diorama all about it!

Our homeschool is changing as my boys get older. So, I find myself looking for new ways to make learning fun. One of the ways that I get inspiration for our plans is to chat with them about what we've enjoyed in the past and some of our favorite activities.

As we got ready for all of our back to homeschool fun, the boys reminded me of all the incredible times that we've had learning about butterflies. We've adopted caterpillars and watched their magnificent transformation into butterflies. The boys and I have observed butterflies on our nature walks and used our identification cards along the way. And we've enjoy simple crafts, like this paper chain caterpillar!

When I thought of ways to build on all that butterfly learning fun that we've had in the past, I thought this life cycle of a butterfly project would be a blast! It's a fun way to explore the different stages of a butterfly.

Creative Ideas on How to Make & Enjoy This Life Cycle Diorama

I think it's a great idea for you to print these pages on white cardstock. By doing this, you'll help your butterfly's life cycle diorama be more durable and easy to work with. Remember to print out extra copies, in case one of your kids would like to make an extra diorama or accidentally tears a tab.

Make this life cycle diorama as is. OR you find a box (like a small shoebox) about the size of the diorama and put it in there.

I recommend having these materials as you make your life cycle of a butterfly project:

  • scissors
  • glue or gluestick
  • tape (or double-sided tape)
  • coloring tools (if using the black-and-white version) like:
    • crayons
    • color pencils
    • fine-tip markers

In my experience, it's best to make the diorama ahead of time. It makes it easier for me to explain to my boys and break down the steps. Also, I prefer to have an example as I show the boys what I did.
