Sports + Coloring = A Bunch of Fun!

Do your kids love sports? Or maybe you have students who just can't wait until gym time or recess to play one of their favorite athletic activities? Perhaps you need simple print-and-go ways to enjoy sport themes?

Well, these free printable sports coloring pages for color by number fun are perfect for all of those things and more!

My dad is a retired health and physical education teacher. He also coached football and girls track. And I feel so lucky that he shared his knowledge and experience with my brother, sister, and me.

As kids, he taught us the value of physical fitness and wellness. We had all sorts of sports equipment to use at home (including awesome jump ropes and those cool scooter seats). At meals, we'd hear about the sports (like volleyball, dodgeball, and flag football) that he'd had his students learn in his classes that day.

It wasn't until I was older that I truly appreciated how my dad exposed us to a variety of sports and skills. I got into soccer and track. My brother played football, baseball, and wrestling. My sister was a cheerleader. And we all learned so much from our shared experiences!

As a homeschool mom, I've tried to be intentional about helping my boys learn about the value of health and physical fitness. Part of our homeschool physical education has been exploring different sports and giving them a try. I'm sharing these color by number pages because I would have loved to use them with my boys when they were younger!

These printable pages allow younger learners to follow instructions, use creativity, and strengthen hand muscles. Other benefits include working on fine motor skills, as well as color plus number recognition.

These 8 sports color-by-number activities have themes of:

  • football (with goalpost)
  • bowling (with ball and pins)

Creative Ideas for These Printable Sports Activities

A smart way to help your students take these sports printables to the next level is by having them choose from a variety of coloring tools. My boys often use crayons, colored pencils, or markers. Oh, and thin Kwik Stix (tempera paint sticks) and oil pastels are awesome for bold colors and effects!

  • Display each of the completed pages. Place the work on your refrigerator, cork board, wall, hallway, bulletin board, or other frequently viewed areas. Kids will beam with pride when they see their hard work!
  • During the coloring time, play music in the background. Try calming or energizing music based on what you'd like your young learners to do.
  • Cut out the finished project (by cutting along the solid black line). Glue on construction paper or decorative cardstock. This step is fantastic if you're going to display the work.

Tip: Print out extra copies of these sports coloring pages in case someone makes a "mistake". And you may want to join the fun!
