What are work mats? I coined the term "work mats" when trying to describe how we use them. I print and laminate the work mats. My younger boys use these work mats for:
- letter recognition
- number recognition
- sight words practice
- math facts practice
Sure, we use playdough with our work mats, but also love to use other fun materials. For these specific work mats, we will use the following manipulatives for markers:
- cotton balls
- marshmallows
- pom poms
- playdough
- paper
- markers
Winter Work Mats to Boost Learning Fun
I have found it to be very effective to use these work mats after a homeschool lesson to review concepts. I use a dry erase marker to write the answers on the "holes" (circles). I ask the boys questions from their lesson or chapter. The boys use one of the manipulatives to cover the correct answer.
If the boys select a wrong answer, we go back to that section of the lesson or chapter for review. After completing the other questions, the boys have the opportunity to try that question again.
If the boys are really struggling to find correct answers, I put the work mat away for use the next day. We return to that material, review, and try again. These winter work mats are fabulous for review and assessment!
