This axolotl craft for kids is a super cute and easy project to enjoy with your kids. Whether your kids are obsessed with Minecraft (like my younger boys are), fascinated by these under water creatures, or just love making fun and fuzzy DIY creations, this simple activity is sure to be a hit.
It’s made with just few supplies (pom poms and pipe cleaners). I’m sharing step-by-step instructions with helpful pictures to guide you every step of the way. Plus, I’ve got creative tips and ideas to extend the fun.
Pom Poms + Pipe Cleaners = Axolotl Awesomeness!
You really do learn something new every day. I’ll never forget when my two younger boys came racing into the room to tell me about a new Minecraft game development. “Axolotls!!!”
After I got them to calm down, I had them explain to me what these under water creatures are and their significance in the game. And then I started seeing these cuties everywhere!
With the recent Minecraft movie release, my younger boys have rekindled their love for all things blocky and creative, especially the adorable axolotls. They’ve been having so much fun with our axolotl bookmarks and coloring pages. I wanted them to have a hands-on project for more screen-free fun.
These pom pom axolotls turned out so cute. My boys didn’t just stop at one… they made a whole rainbow of them! (Who says axolotls have to be pink?)
We’re even thinking of using their new axolotl friends as “learning buddies” during homeschool time – just a little something fun to encourage focus and brighten their day.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making This Easy Axolotl Craft for Kids
Prepare the axolotl frills.
Cut the pipe cleaners into six equal sections. Fold each section in half to form a loop, then twist the ends together to secure. You should have a total of six looped frills.
Attach the frills.
Glue three frills to each side of the pom pom. It’s okay if they overlap a bit.
Create and attach the face.
Cut out two small circles from black felt for the eyes. Cut a small curved strip for the mouth. Glue the eyes and mouth onto the front of the pom pom. Allow the glue to fully dry before playing with or displaying.
Use googly eyes instead of felt for a fun and animated look.
Frequently Asked Questions About This DIY Axolotl Project
This craft is best for ages 4 and up. Younger children will need supervision, especially when using glue guns or scissors. Older kids and tweens will love making them, too!
Yes! You can use tacky glue or school glue though it may take longer to dry. For faster results and a sturdier hold, a low-temp hot glue gun works best (with adult help).
