Easily Make Spelling Fun

Are you looking for quick and frugal ways to make spelling fun for kids? Maybe you need some hands-on activities to practice spelling words? Or perhaps you just like to have some cool challenges to get your thinking?

Well, this free printable roll and spell game set is wonderful for all of those things and more!

When I was in school, I was a complete spelling geek. I loved spelling! In fact, I loved it so much that I finished my 5th grade spelling book by mid-October. Luckily, my teacher let me work ahead and finish tests, etc. As a "reward", I got to help my classmates and then grade their work.

Spelling just came easily to me. But, I know that's not how it is for everyone - including my boys.

When we started homeschooling, I was initially surprised that spelling would be a struggle. All of my boys quickly picked up reading skills. I assumed that spelling would follow the same course.

Alas, it did not. So, I looked for engaging ways to make spelling fun for my boys!

This free printable roll and spell game set is one of the ways that we've had a blast with spelling.

The Importance of Spelling Skills

Before I get to all the awesomeness of these spelling games, let's look at why spelling is important and its benefits in learning and life (in case your kids are like my boys and ask why do I need to learn this stuff 😉).

  • Spelling is essential for written communication. A misspelled word can cause tremendous problems or misunderstandings.
  • Reading skills are closely tied to spelling, like the relationship between letters and sounds.
  • Future employment can be influenced by spelling abilities. An application, resume, or company email with mistakes can have a negative impact.

Overall, spelling boosts vocabulary and reading comprehension. From my experience (and what I've observed with my boys), the ability to spell well empowers you to read quicker and with greater accuracy.

Creative Ways to Use These Free Printable Spelling Games

You'll need at least one die to play these spelling games. I like to have extra dice available just in case one goes missing or to easily change things up.

I recommend printing these games on white cardstock. Also, it's a great idea to laminate these spelling game cards!

If the spelling prompt includes writing, a few ideas to try are:

  • Using writing tools with different colors (like erasable pens, pencils, fine-tip markers)
  • Small chalkboard
  • Whiteboard
  • Window markers
  • Tracing with your finger using:
  • Scrabble tiles
  • Banagram tiles
