DIY Colorful Seashells Are Delightful
Looking for a super cool summer craft that’s colorful, easy, and keeps your kids engaged (and off screens)? These tie dye seashells are just the thing!
My boys and I get such a kick out of collecting seashells. It’s so much fun finding a variety of shells. As much I love our collection, I don’t like just leaving them in pails or stashed away in a closet. I like to have use actually do something with those treasures.
This tie dye seashell idea is one of the projects we’ve tried. It started as a “let’s see what happens” kind of thing that turned out amazing.
I think it’s wonderful how this craft turns into unique creations. And that there are so many different ways to enjoy the final project!
What You Need and How to Make Your Tie Dye Seashells
Besides shells, you really only need 2 materials to do this craft. Make sure you have:
- Clean seashells
- Washable markers
- Spray bottle with water
Prepare the seashells and color
Gently wash the seashells to remove any sand or dirt. Let them dry completely. Use washable markers to draw all over the seashells. Be creative! Try swirls, stripes, or random doodles.
Spray the shells and let dry
Lightly spray the colored seashells with water. Watch as the colors start to blend and create a tie-dye effect. Place the seashells on a paper towel or tray. Let them dry completely.
Creative Ways to Use Your Colorful Seashells
Not exactly sure how to use your tie dye seashells? No worries! Here are some easy ways to enjoy your shells:
- DIY Decor: Use your tie dye seashells to brighten up your homeschool space, living room, classroom, or other frequently-visited area. Use in a summer-themed centerpiece. Display in a clear jar or bowl. Glue them onto picture frames, mirrors, or canvas for ocean-inspired art.
- Math Manipulatives: Add some color to your homeschool math time. Use the shells as counters for simple addition or subtraction. Enjoy for skip counting, patterns, or graphing.
- Seashell Scavenger Hunt: Hide the decorated shells around your yard or home for a colorful scavenger hunt. Great for summer parties, playdates, or just some afternoon fun!
- Alphabet or Number Matching: Write letters or numbers on the back of the tie dye shells and use them for matching games.
Frequently Asked Questions About Tie Dye Seashells
We have found that washable markers work the best. They blend well with water and are easy for kids to use. Washable dot-a-dot markers (bingo daubers) can do a good job, too. Another cool option to try is washable paints.
Definitely! You can find bags of seashells at most craft stores or online. Just make sure they have smooth or lightly ridged surfaces for the best results with the marker colors.
Since washable markers are water-based, the colors can fade or smudge. If you’d like to keep the colors vibrant (or prevent smudges), you can seal the shells with a clear acrylic spray or Mod Podge after drying.
