This torn paper American flag craft for kids is an easy and frugal activity that's perfect for patriotic fun. If you're looking for a creative way to celebrate the stars and stripes, this mess-free project is a must-try.
With just two supplies (construction paper and a glue stick), your students can make their own decorations for Memorial Day, Flag Day, the 4th of July, or any other patriotic holiday. It also can used for a hands-on history project.

Enjoy a Simple Patriotic Project with Kids
Oh my stars! Don't you just love it when you can find an activity for your children to enjoy that's inexpensive (better yet - free!), is educational and fun? And if it helps build fine motor skills, it feels like bonus points or a cherry on top!
I’ve used this simple American flag craft in our homeschool a bunch of times with my boys. It’s always a been a big hit. We've used this activity to make DIY decorations for our homeschool room and display around our home.
Another super cool way that we've used this craft is for history fun. As we would learn about U.S. history (one of our favorite subjects), the boys would make different versions of the flag over the years. It’s such a fun hands-on way to learn about the flag’s evolution!

What You'll Need for This American Flag Craft
One of my favorite things about this activity is that it requires almost no prep work and supplies you probably already have in your home or classroom. To get started, you'll need:
- Red, white, and blue construction paper
- White construction paper (as the base)
- Glue stick
- Optional: free printable American flag templates
If you want to add a bit of sparkle to your flags, you can use glitter glue or glitter washi tape. Also, if you'd rather not use torn paper, feel free to use coloring tools (like crayons, color pencils, and markers) to customize the free printable templates.
How to Make This Torn Paper American Flag Craft
Prepare the flag base.
On a sheet of white construction paper, lightly sketch the shape of an American flag. Include a rectangle in the top left corner for the blue field and mark where the stripes will go. OR use our free printable American flag templates!
Tear the paper.
Tear red and blue construction paper into small pieces. For the stars, tear smaller pieces of white paper.
Glue and make the blue section.
Start by gluing the torn blue paper squares in the top left rectangle.
Glue and make the red stripes.
Alternate gluing torn red paper pieces to create the stripes of the flag
Glue on the white "stars".
Glue the small torn white pieces onto the blue section to resemble stars.
Frequently Asked Questions about This Flag Craft
This craft is amazing for kids of all ages! Younger children may need some assistance with tearing the paper or using the glue stick. Older kids can do the entire project alone and possible include additional details.
For younger children, pre-tearing the construction paper into strips or small pieces can help. You can also guide them through placing the paper pieces on the flag in a more structured way, so they can focus on the fun part of sticking it all together.
