Help Your Kids Track Reading Progress with Printable Charts

I wanted fun ways to help my boys maintain reading logs. In our state (Pennsylvania), we are required to keep reading logs for homeschool portfolios.

My youngest boy (5) is joining his older brothers in the exciting world of reading. Xman is so excited! He wanted a way to keep track of his reading practice time, as well as independent reading time that he shares with his brothers.

Charts have also been great motivation tools in our homeschool. We track required homeschool days with a special chart. My boys love the visual reminder of our progress and the learning fun that we can anticipate.

Reasons to Use Reading Logs for Kids

If you're wondering what's the point of using reading logs with your kids, check out these awesome reasons:

  • Track progress:  Your kids can monitor how much reading they have accomplished. For young readers, you can record each book in a slot. For older readers, mark down a slot for every 15-20 minutes read (or whatever you've agreed upon).
  • Motivate reluctant readers:  Printable reading log charts can be great visual motivators for kids. These simple printables can be fantastic motivators for reading books. Work on goal setting and persistence, too!
  • Homeschool portfolio documentation:  If you need or want to put together homeschool portfolios, reading log charts are fantastic ways to document books read and how many minutes have been spent reading.
  • Improve reading comprehension, vocabulary, and literacy.
  • Develop a good habit of consistent reading.
  • Make reading fun!: These charts are awesome ways to turn reading into a game.

Fun Ideas + Tips for Using Your Reading Log Charts for Kids

Want to make the most of using your reading log printable charts for kids? Here are my tips and tricks for making it effective and fun 🙂

Set realistic expectations for your kids. Consider how many minutes (or books) reading need to be completed. Another way to boost this practice is to have your child discuss their independent reading selections with you.

Agree upon an appropriate reward. This step is optional but can be so much fun!

The reward doesn't have to be material. It can be something simple like extra board game time, family movie night (maybe featuring the book or the book's theme?), a special outing like a hike, or themed poetry teatime.

Pair the activity with keeping a book log, coloring bookmarks, and reading journals.

Oh, and have your kids add title of book, favorite quotes, doodles or illustrations on the back of these printable pages to share their favorite books!

Make it a fun reading challenge for daily reading or so much time spent reading each week. Wonderful ways to help your kids develop positive habits of reading!

Fun stickers & stamps make using this mermaid-themed reading tracker chart a blast to use.

Determine how your child will track their reading progress. Some fun options are using a bingo dauber, stickers, stamps, or color in the slots with crayons, markers, or color pencils.

Watching their charts fill up and be completed can be such a wonderful sense of achievement for your kids!

  1. I placed items in the cart but now i can't find the cart. There isn't an icon like a shopping cart of a shopping bag to check out. This is confusing since I am trying to access the items.

    1. With your permission, I’ll email you the link. I’m not sure why the cart icon isn’t shopping up for you 🙁
