A Fun Introduction to Planning for Kids
Planning is not always a natural skill. Although I am a #plannergirl and LOVE all things planning, I realized that not all of my boys are natural planners (or great at time management-but that’s a topic for another post 😉 ).
Since I love planning so much, I have a tendency to want to do it all and forget to include my boys in the process. Learning how to plan and schedule is an important life skill that I don’t want my boys to miss. So, I’m working on ways to help my boys learn and practice planning techniques that will benefit them as they get older.
Captain, my oldest, takes planning in stride. He uses a combination of an app on his smartphone and jotting down reminders in a spiral notebook. These methods serve him well for homeschool work, soccer training, and social activities.
Professor (14) is working on becoming a planner. He’s made a lot of progress this year with sorting out his high school homeschool work and how to get it all done with his competitive soccer schedule.
My younger three boys struggle with planning. This struggle probably stems from their ages (10, 8, 5) but I want to do what I can to help them learn how to properly plan and prepare for their day, week, month, etc.
When I’ve mentioned planning to my younger boys, I see their eyes glaze over and their minds wandering off into different dimensions. I know that if I want to get these boys on board with learning how to plan that I’ve got to make it fun 🙂
Fun Planners Are An Awesome Team-Building Experience
Seasonal and fun holidays are already a big part of our homeschool. We have a blast talking about and enjoying activities to celebrate fun days like Periodic Table Day, Random Acts of Kindness Day, and Love Your Pet Day.
I’ve created and shared several homeschool fun calendars and activities. For teaching my boys how to plan, I decided that a special February Fun Days Planner would be a fabulous way to continue this type of learning fun and engage my boys in planning our celebrations.
A huge part of our large family relaxed homeschool is teamwork. There is absolutely no way that we could do it all if we didn’t work and support each other every day. As we work together, we experience benefits like:
- Clear communication
- Creativity (we definitely learn from all the ideas shared!)
- Accountability (if we say we’re going to do it, we work so much harder to make sure it happens)
- Homeschool & family unity
To make it a teamwork experience, I sit down with my three younger boys (the older boys are invited to participate and usually do if they’re not off playing soccer or reading) and talk about what we’re planning and why. The boys help me gather special writing utensils (see below) and we put on some fun music.
Due to our erratic schedule, we have to be selective in which February Fun Days that we’ll actively celebrate. The boys and I will at least talk about each fun holiday but don’t always have the time to turn it into a mini-celebration.
After reviewing the February Fun Days Planner and chart, the boys and I pick out our favorites. The planner is undated (so you can use year after year) so we add dates and the special days that we’ll enjoy.
Then, our brainstorm session really kicks into high gear! We consult our previous homeschool fun calendars and most recent Calendar of Fun Days for Kids (this post has links to activities, videos, and more for ways to celebrate fun days). These ideas spark additional ideas for having learning fun with fun holidays.
Creative Ways to Celebrate These February Fun Days with Kids
Are you ready to have some planning fun with your kids? My #1 tip is to keep it simple and relaxed. Look at this experience as an opportunity to spend special time with your kids as you connect and learn a new skill together.
If you’d like to jazz up your planning time with kids, here are a few creative ideas for boosting the experience:
- Bring out the fun writing utensils! Our favorite planning supplies are Frixional Erasable Pens in a rainbow of colors. These pens are perfect because they write smooth and erase clean (so no tears if a mistake is made).
- Play your favorite music in the background. If you’re shooting for a relaxing experience, put on some classical or spa songs. Want to add some energy to your planning time? Pop on some tunes that make your feet tap and get the ideas flowing!
- Add stickers and stamps based on seasonal and holidays to your planning. Your kids will also love stickers with themes based on their interests. (For example, my boys love all things Avengers.)
- Washi tape for the win! This planning accessory is simply amazing. Available in a variety of colors, styles, textures, and themes, you really can’t go wrong with washi tape. Plus, you can easily peel it off and adjust its position if necessary (again, no tears if you have a child with perfectionistic tendencies!).
