A Simple Craft That’s Fun for Kids

I remember when my oldest son was little and asked for a Star Wars-themed birthday party. I wasn’t that surprised since we read a bunch of books and played with toys that have Star Wars themes.

One of my favorite memories from that time was when we made Chewbacca paper bag puppets together. He was so excited to create these furry little Wookiee pals for his party. We worked as a team, cutting, gluing, and adding special touches. The best part? Watching him proudly show off his Chewbacca puppets to his brothers and friends!

Not only did we have a bunch of adorable Chewie puppets to use as party decorations, but each guest also got to take one home as a fun party favor. I loved how the simple craft brought a personal touch to the party and gave my son such a sense of accomplishment.

With May The 4th Be With You coming soon, I had to recreate this easy craft and share with you!

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making Your Chewbacca Puppet

Before you get started with your paper bag craft, I wanted to make sure that you knew that you’ll need these basic shapes (for each Chewbacca) cut out of paper:

  • Eyes: 2 white circles
  • Pupils: 2 smaller black circles
  • Nose: 1 black circle
  • Bandolier: 1 long black rectangle (measured to fit diagonally across the bag)
  • Bandolier Details: 3 small white rectangles

Create the Eyes and the Bandolier.

Glue the two black circles onto the two white circles to form Chewbacca’s eyes. Glue the three white rectangles evenly spaced onto the long black rectangle.

Assemble Chewbacca’s face.

Glue the eyes onto the top flap of the paper bag. Glue the black nose circle just below the eyes.

Attach the bandolier.

Glue the black rectangle diagonally across the front of the paper bag to resemble Chewbacca’s iconic gear.

Add fur texture.

Use two shades of brown markers to draw fur-like lines all over the paper bag for a realistic look. Allow the glue to dry completely before playing with your puppet.
