Delightful Way to Teach Kids About Diversity

Would you like a creative and engaging way to help talk to your children about diversity? Maybe you're planning and preparing to celebrate MLK Day or other event with similar themes? Perhaps you need a hands-on way to bring an abstract concept like diversity to life for your children?

Well, this easy diversity craft featuring a heart suncatcher is a frugal way to do all of those things and more!

When I started homeschooling my boys, I wanted to make sure that I included a variety of activities and themes that would help them learn about the world around us. To introduce my children to topics and cultures outside of our own lives, I found books and videos to start the conversation. Hands-on projects, like crafts, were helpful ways to continue those important lessons.

I made a version of this diversity heart suncatcher craft with all of my boys. We would make it in the first week or two of January to prepare for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. These DIY suncatchers would adorn the windows of our homeschool space (a.k.a. dining room) throughout the year, especially for Black History Month and Juneteenth.

This simple craft uses only 2 materials. It's easy to assemble and get the supplies ready.

  • Different Shades of Cardstock (black, various neutral shades to represent different skin tones)
  • Contact Paper
  • Scissors

Want a different look for your suncatcher? I encourage you to think outside the box to customize your project. Consider using different colors of tissue paper for a rainbow-like effect to surround the hearts.

Add your student's name (and the date) with a white or metallic marker.

Creative Ideas for Making and Using This Diversity Craft for Kids

If you'd like a unique type of frame for your suncatcher, use washi tape. It's easy to apply and move around, if necessary. Plus, it comes in so many different colors, patterns, and textures.

Display your diversity craft for kids on windows. Another cool idea it to add a small hole to the top of the heart. Use string to hang the heart from the ceiling.

Make extra suncatchers to share with family and friends to spread the message of diversity.

Fun Ways to Learn More About Diversity with Kids

Books and videos are brilliant ways to teach your students about diversity. It can be helpful to find examples for children to relate to. When my boys were young, I started with books like The Crayon Box That Talked.
