Delightful Way to Teach Kids About Diversity
Would you like a creative and engaging way to help talk to your children about diversity? Maybe you're planning and preparing to celebrate MLK Day or other event with similar themes? Perhaps you need a hands-on way to bring an abstract concept like diversity to life for your children?
Well, this easy diversity craft featuring a heart suncatcher is a frugal way to do all of those things and more!
When I started homeschooling my boys, I wanted to make sure that I included a variety of activities and themes that would help them learn about the world around us. To introduce my children to topics and cultures outside of our own lives, I found books and videos to start the conversation. Hands-on projects, like crafts, were helpful ways to continue those important lessons.
I made a version of this diversity heart suncatcher craft with all of my boys. We would make it in the first week or two of January to prepare for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. These DIY suncatchers would adorn the windows of our homeschool space (a.k.a. dining room) throughout the year, especially for Black History Month and Juneteenth.

How to Make This Diversity Suncatcher Craft
01
Prepare heart frame
Fold a sheet of black cardstock in half. Draw half heart nearly the same size as the cardstock.
02
Cut out heart frame
Cut a heart shape out. Do not unfold yet.
Cut a second heart inside the first, leaving about a 1 cm to 1in border. Unfold.
03
Cut out small hearts
Cut several smaller hearts out of the other colors. These hearts should be small enough to fit into the bigger heart together.
04
Prepare contact paper and add heart frame
Cut a sheet of contact paper slightly bigger than the heart. Lay on the surface, sticky side up.
Lay the heart on contact paper and press lightly to fix it in place.
05
Add smaller hearts
Place smaller hearts inside the bigger heart.
06
Add contact paper and trim
Cut a second sheet of contact paper the same size as the first. Lay it (sticky side down) on top of the other sheet so the hearts are sandwiched in between.
Press firmly to seal the heart inside. Trim off excess.
Creative Ideas for Making and Using This Diversity Craft for Kids
If you'd like a unique type of frame for your suncatcher, use washi tape. It's easy to apply and move around, if necessary. Plus, it comes in so many different colors, patterns, and textures.
Display your diversity craft for kids on windows. Another cool idea it to add a small hole to the top of the heart. Use string to hang the heart from the ceiling.
Make extra suncatchers to share with family and friends to spread the message of diversity.
