Why Groundhog Day Can Be Fun to Celebrate with Kids
Is Groundhog Day (February 2) a big event in your area?
It sure is for us! Our family lives northeast of Pittsburgh, only about an hour away from Punxsutawney, the home of Punxsutawney Phil and Gobbler’s Knob.
Although my boys and I have never been to the live event (it’s on our homeschool bucket list), we enjoy chatting about and celebrating this fun day.
Over the years, we’ve learned about the history of Groundhog Day and how it’s become an observance in the United States.
And this special day adds a bit of excitement to February when the weather is usually blah and gray where we live. Will Phil see his shadow (and we’ll have 6 more weeks of winter)? Or will Spring come early this year?
It’s fun to predict what Phil will do – and if his prediction will be true!
To boost the celebration, I’m sharing this free Groundhog Day color by number pack!

Easy Ways to Boost the Fun with These Coloring Activities for Kids
You can use these Groundhog Day color by number worksheets on this special day itself. Or you may want to enjoy a day or two ahead of time to spark curiosity and conversation.
Encourage your kids to use the back of the pages to record their predictions for:
- Will Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow or not?
- Will we have another 6 weeks of winter?
- When do you think spring weather will start?
- Add any other predictions that your children or you can think of!
Gather a variety of coloring tools to complete these pages. My boys have enjoyed using:
- color pencils
- chalk pastels
- oil pastels
- Kwik Stix (or similar tempera paint sticks)
- watercolor paints
If you have a bit of extra time, your students can cut out their Groundhog color by number work. Glue onto construction paper or cardstock for a cool DIY frame.
Your kids can add stickers, stamps, doodles, or washi tape to their DIY frames, too!
